Strolled around town yesterday and when passing soi 19 and Asok area I saw a new restaurant where there earlier use to be an italian. I think the old name was "Grotto" or something like that.
The place looked fantastic from the outside. Very nice architecture and layout. Inviting you might call it. Since it was time for dinner I thought it be nice to try it.
Inside you are greeted by a young european man who is one of the team who set it all up. I later chatted with him quite a bit as he very genoursly invited me for a drink.
The signature dishes is best available steaks from Argentina and USA. They also have pastas, skewers and other mouthwatering alternatives. But I wanted a big nice steak with salad. So ordered a 250 g filet with bearnaise, baked potato and salad. All extras are unfortunately addons and charged separately. Might be a bit better if included. I ordered the steak medium well but it was delivered a bit too much red for my liking and they immediately returned it to the chef for correction. No problem and perhaps it relays to different views on what is medium cooked etc.
The service from the european guy was fast, friendly and very attentive. The thai staff did not yet seem "run-in" yet, but one has to remember that this place has only been open for business less than a week! (30 august).
When I started to eat I was amazed with the taste and tenderness of the steak! Sauce was perfect, baked potatoe exactly on the spot and this was a better experience than Landmark or Marriot steakhouses - who of course not bad at all.
The restaurant is big and very attractive and well planned. They have spent a lot of investment there and the friendly young man told me that this is their 4th place in asia. They also have one in Vietnam. He was also all new to Thailand and knew nothing about Bangkok. I could provide him with some useful tips in return!
This is not a budget place. You can eat at ok price but if you go for the best steaks they start at around 1000 bahts. Plus all the extras, drinks etc. My dinner, with a couple of glasses of wine (very good and big selection there! The one recommended to me was excellent! You can even buy a bottle and bring with you home) - coffee, cognac, but no starter or desert landed at 3.500 baht. A lot? Well, for this standard it would be a lot more in europe.
The a/c was turned on at a bit too cold, but they said it would be corrected. Otherwise this place for sure has a great future. A very good thing is that they have some western staff that overlooks things and talks to the customers. For sure they have good experience and know the business.
I will go back for sure and bring friends. You can also sit outside for the dinner or a drink. This was a very pleasant surprise and for sure Bkk has a new great restaurant! Recommended!

Jojje, great post. Nice to hear from you again. I hope that cranky intolerant guy does not ruin your btf experience again. The Argentinian Steak House sounds good.
I do not know if the restaurants are related, I had very enjoyable experience at the Saigon (District 1) Argentinian Steak House with Ponyboy. On Thursday nites (or Sunday) for about $35 US the Saigon store has servings of all their cuts of meat. The various cuts are freshly cooked and individually brought to your table in intervals for your selection. You can have as much as you want of each cut. The selections even included filet mignon and an excellent smoked ham. Also included baked potato, corn, vegetables and salad. The Saigon store featured Argentinian, Australian and US beef. There was also a very good wine selection.

Thanks! Yes I will try to submit some tips and ideas again in the future. If they are relevant. I am not so much in Bangkok these days. Mostly for shorter visits. Main time now spent in Hua Hin. Seem to me they are very ambitious and if they can keep things at that level every visit, for sure they will be succesful. Well deserved in my mind. That was probably English as taught by Vice President Dan Quayle.
In Trenton on June 15, 1992, a 12 year old boy had to correct the Vice President of the United States that the singular for potato was not spelt "potatoe".
In the plural form, it is spelt "potatoes".

When asked how he managed to get the place renovated so quickly the reply was that he brought in Vietnamese to do the job.
I do wonder how he managed to get work permits for them all, but suspect it was done on the "down low".

This place was raided by immigration a month or so back and all the farrang serving staff taken away for not having work permits....does anyone know if this was 'resolved' ?
One of the best things at this place (amongst many) was that the staff new exactly what they were about, recommending suitable wines to accompany your order and understanding perfectly. It was like being in a real restaurant which is hard in Thailand !
