Just wondering about prices, and quality, i've heard it's pretty expensive, but is it worth it?  I've heard you can get just about any fish in the wold here, is this true?

I promised myself I would write this report on my experiences of the past two weeks.

I had two big business dinners/meetings and knowing that a group of falangs with little tolerance for experimentation in Thai cuisine would not be interested in the more authentic local eateries, I opted to take them to Seafood Market Soi 24. You know the drill- fun to go 'shop', good selection of seafood, bright & clean place. What could be better?

I knew better, but went anyway.

NEVER AGAIN!!

Ok, we all know it is expensive, the staff is less than the usual friendly Thai and some of their cooking fees are arbitrary when it comes to 'small, medium and large' pricing.

But it really pissed me off when on both occasions they wanted to stick us with a BT 25 charge (per towel) for the wet towels they handed out! That charge is not posted anywhere.

But let's not stop the gouging there, on the second visit (they missed it the first time), they were charging a 'corkage' fee for wine that had been purchased on site!!I was directed to a charge on the menu of 'wine service' and this was per bottle (about 8 bottles that night).

And just to really spit in my eye, lets charge Bt 150 for ice.... not a extra bucket of ice, as we did not have one, but (as it was explained to me by the manager) the ice charge was for the ice in the water glasses!!

I refused all these charges and after many minutes of arguing, was able to get them all removed. The total of these charges added up to 10% of the 'cooking' fees or almost BT 700.

Please members of the forum, I recommend a boycott as this is an abuse that needs to be stopped. I recognize that many Japanese patrons go there and it is highly unusual for them to challenge the bill. But this place is out of control. They are getting top dollar (not Baht) for the food and drinks as well as cooking fees. IMO, they do not need to try to bend everyone over for another BT 700.

Spread the word and if you have Japanese friends/customers etc. tell them about it as well. Maybe then these practices will stop and more people will be inclined to go back there.

Yeah, the food is good but screw that place!!

Interesting. And totally outrageous. I have eaten there many times but of course I never look at the bill. Will definitely boycott the place from now on.

Anyway the likes of Baan Klang Nam (Rama 3) (probably best thai restaurant to take farang tourists) and Pen corner of Narathiwet and Chan roads are much better.

Those charges are somewhat ironic considering that the idea of the restaurant is that you save VAT as you purchase your own food (and only have to pay VAT on the services).

Their slogan is true 'if it swims, they cook it' I jacked off on their hotplate after complaining about the service and they cooked those little buggers well and good.

And I thought the lobster was cooked in cheese sauce!

One should be careful 'flogging the dolphin' on those hotplates. Especially in full view of all arriving customers.

You could be mistaken for "Tonights Special". And then they would also charge you for the towels to wipe off after you finished!

Ditto!

Overpriced tourist trap - as are MANY of the large outdoor pick-&-cook seafood restaurants there. But that one is additionally a scam artist.

Two of my favorite outdoor pick-&-cook are:

Yok Yor: on the river across from Royal Orchid Sheraton. Large, casual, good river view (with mediocre music/show), and excellent seafood at reasonable prices. They pickup on Bangkok side, at RiverCenter Pier as I believe I recall.

Silom Village: pleasant dining atmosphere on large patio midst antique shops - decent prices.

Yeah, I was there too - suggested my my TG at the time, and the food was outrageaously good.

Service was 'so-so', and I didn't check the bill. Had some of the best sex that night

Still, I'll probably go next time, but will scrutinize the bill.

If any of you do go back to this place, be advised you do not have to pay for towels, ice or corkage service (wine bought there). Check the bill for 'cooking services' for these extras.

I argued on the last two occasions and finally got it all removed. It indicates that they are aware they are screwing people... I just want them to use K-Y first!
