So how are we doing? Well as I started this thread (and under the new rules you cant thread-f_ck me) I am going to be judge and jury on this. Ok I will definitely add Mahanaga to the list. I wouldnt normally include a Thai restaurant on a 'cool and trendy' restaurant list on the basis that most people are impressed in Thailand by those restaurants you go to and have a meal for 4 for Bt7. But Mahanaga has interesting food (ostrich done Thai style) great atmosphere (what is with the orchestra?) and is outrageously expensive. For Thai food to impress I will add Baan Klang Nam. Set on the river in an old Thai house, the seafood is awesome and the view and feel of the place fantastic. Le Dalat Indochine (the Le Dalat on soi 23 set in an old Thai house) is also a great addition. Vietnamese food with a staff that make you feel like a king. Le Normandie is probably the best French restaurant in Bangkok BUT they gave me a jacket and tie to wear last time I went in the evening (which made me look a complete plonker and certainly didnt impress). A great place for lunch though; they have a set 3 course menu for about Bt1000/head that cant be beat. Greyhound cafe doesnt make my list either. The food is ok and it is a cool for people watching. But the key to a 'cool and trendy restaurant' is that you can spend 3 hours there soaking up the atmosphere. In Emporium, I would prefer the Oriental restaurant, Kalapapreuk on first or Aoi. So that leaves me 2 restaurants I havent been to - Zanzibar and Vertigo. I agree that there should be a 'real' Italian restaurant on the list but Zanzibar faces serious competition. There are so many good Italian restaurants - Zanotti, Calderazzo, Antonios, Giannis. I must try Vertigo - which I think is on like the 68th floor of Thai Wah 2. You cant beat a high rise view of Bangkok for atmosphere and impression. So here we have Abrak's list of cool and trendy Bangkok restaurants. The Face Bed Supperclub Sirocco Mahanaga Baan Klang Nam Le Dalat Indochine Possible additions Zanzibar Vertigo Zanotti

Starters Bt250-Bt500 Main Bt500-Bt1200 Probably spend Bt1000-1500 a head excluding drinks. A recent meal for 4 there cost me Bt11k including 2 bottles of wine and 2 beers. Value the place is not. www.mahanaga.com

Food must be real bad if you thinking like that, Smegs. All good reccommendatins - the problem with eating non-thai in Thailand is that is all hit and miss, so good to have a reliable and informative thread. I still find it hard to go past the Sauted Muscles in Tomato Sauce and a bucket of mixed breads at PanPan on 33... nice fruity grappa there too!

Zanzibar might be on my "trendy" list, because they try to be... but it would not be on my best food list because I have encountered very average fare there. And the service is inconsistent too. An easy place to take a TG to though... Less trendy but far better: Scuzzi. Probably the best Italian in Thailand for my money (though a couple like Gianni are close). Impresses... but mainly because of the food and the owner's style. Near the top of any Italian "trendy" list would have to be Angelini at the Shang; food is average and poor value, but they work hard on being trendy and there is a steady hiso trade there. They stage periodic fashion shows that would impress any TG.

When it comes to Italian food, let the Italian guy make the talk! From the names so far mentioned: San Remo: a total no-no! Angelini: following the trend of the Shang, great first impression, but then the quality of the food is not up to the expectations.... Zanotti: too pricy, more the name than the food but still among the top 3 in Bangkok NM, the restaurant we went last time is named "Limoncello" (just like the famous Italian spirit), right now is the best one in terms of price/quality Oh, btw, how come Privilege didn't make into the list???

CONFUSION on Soi 23 is one worth considering. It has a very interesting and original menu (including Ostrich), relaxed and intimate surroundings with great service. They have a website thaiconfusion.com. Certainly not as expensive as mahanaga but definitely would challenge it with regards to quality and variety of food. At the moment they have a great pate special..... I mean real pate - not the tinned stuff.

Not sure if it fits in the category "Cool" but no doubt the Thai Restaurant "Blue Elephant" in Sathorn (former Chinese Chamber of Commerce) is one of the most elegant venues, not belonging to a hotel. Food is superb, the deco are really classy in a Thai way, service is excellent and prices are still reasonable...plenty of room and solutions for a romantic candlelight or a corporate dinner of 100s.....
