Corned beef in cans dates back to the days when shipping of beef was difficult i.e. before refrigerated shipping and countries like Argentina had huge beef herds and countries like Britain had a huge demand for cheap protein.

Most corned beef is quite good quality beef which has been rendered down and canned. The process needs to ensure that the meat is chewed up enough to fill the cans without air pockets.

Mechanically recovered meat is what is left on the bones after all reasonable attampts to cut off decent meat.

This is the lowest form of animal protein in the food industry as it contains anything allowed by law. This is where the spinal cord used to finish up and the brains, eyes etc. It is not good for you!!!

MRM ends up in meat pies, sausages and anywhere else you cannot see the contents. If you have any concerns stick to large pieces of meat and make your own sausages at home. It is not difficult.

Bon appetit

Mr Alan
In the US it is called "advanced meat recovery" (AMR). It is not supposed to contain brains and spinal cords, but sometimes does have traces of them in the AMR.

I just happened to be in foodland and checked it out, Spam is available in Pork, Chicken and smoked turkey, no corned beef, I could be getting my cans mixed up here, but I could have sworn they had Spam corned beef in Oz. Anyway, corned beef in a can, the same square/oblong cans with the twist top peeler that kind of peels of with a key is available in Foodlands in 2 brands.

Mr Alan
I didn't see a corned beef (or any beef) variety of Spam on the Hormel website.

Anyway, who cares, I mean really its all bloody mystery meat, so if you can tell the difference between chicken and beef anyway, then good onya.

You are nuts, but hey, I like visiting Mistress Midori. I do World War One, World War Two, and 1948 Israeli re-enacting and interpretive history and I have eaten authentic bully beef, even in authentic tins with the old Fray Bentos label, and I would rather eat Sukhumivit Rat.

Ahhh, nothing beats a great Chicago style Kosher corned beef on rye with a dill pickle and cole slaw and washed down with a chocolate phosphate or Dr. Brown's. Nor can you go wrong with a good plate of Irish corned beef and cabbage at Burhoff's.

I wish some Israeli entrepenuer would open a good deli in Kho Sahn. Why, not. The falafel, weinershnizel, and schwarma stands make a killin. It reminds the Israelis of home, the Americans can actually eat a good falafel for under $5, the Japanese have never tried it. The falafel stands are very cosmopolitan.

The falafelweinerschntizel stands are up are towards the NE end of Kho San. One is a generic stand on the north side of the street and the other is called Mama's Falafel (not to be confused with Mama's Chicken N Waffles here in LA or Mama's Fried Chicken down LA way) on the south side. It is right in front of the bank.

Go to the end and make a left where Gullivers is on Thanon Chakraprong and you will see the Schwarma guy, same chain as the generic falafel. Make a right on Chakraprong, go to first soy and you will see a little cafe called Chochana, that is the Israeli place. Very good. If you want some good Paki, North African, Turkish, or Iraqi food, go to Soi 3 on Sukhumvit.

Cheers

Hey Slipster,

Check this out. I have bought their WW2 corned beef;

If this does not come out go to Google and type in Pegasus productions or go to World War Two Ration Technologies and go to their links section.
