Here's a funny story:

I was with my brother at Koh PanGan, he bought a late night hotdog off a vendor, he took a couple of bytes and then someone bumped into him and it dropped on the floor.

A dog came over, sniffed it and walked away...  No I hear dogs won't eat dog meat, even if cooked (they can tell), so ... who knows

;) I agree with you Bandit.

Anyway, nothing beats a fatty, colesterol rich, arteries-clogging juicy rib-eye steak, a la Morton's of Chicago. Better yet ... an Argentinian "Bife de Chorizo".

oh jeetje... I had never even thought of the possibility of dog meat in LOS.  I thought that was pure V'nam thing.  And now bat-meat in Indonesia.... jeetje.

Smegma... my S.O is like you... he ate everything in Vietnam with the exception of goats balls.  He doesn't understand why I get so squeemish about it.  Heck, I go out of my way here to avoid eating horsemeat.  And I can't stand the word "lamb"... why can't we just call it "sheep"...

Bandit... you say you can tell now by looking at it (nad of course the taste) whethere it's dog meat... is there anyway you can describe that for the rest of us squeemish peeps?  The colour part I mean..PLEASE!

allegedley its just the inhabitants of Sakhon Nakhon who indulge here, and then only in "Black dogs" -  as to Hot dogs / satay sticks etc .... maybe better to stick with chicken !

X - cojones are excellent, you really should try them some time (seriously).   Of course with all this stuff there is the psychological aspect.

I've never (knowingly) eaten dog meat.   It's never been offered, but I would probably try it if it was on offer.  When I was in Korea last summer there were a couple of Hawaiian guys who were specifically looking to try the dog meat soup to see what all the fuss was about.  It's believed by the Koreans to be very healthy, and is somewhat expensive.  The Info Bureau wrote down directions and sent them away in a cab to try it.

Sauron, et. al.: I recently read an article in the Bangkok Post about the slaughter of and sale of dog meat. You are correct, according to that article, that it is basically the people of Sakorn Nahon that eat dog meat. If I am not mistaken, the article said that it was legal to slaughter dogs in that area at only one period of time in that area. It seems as if it was at the end of one of the religious periods in october or November and it was legal for only about one month.

X,

Regarding how the dog meat looks like, well I just thought I could differ it. The meat that I have seen in Indonesia on different occasions had a very dark colour. As for the taste, I remember it had a strong taste and was hard to chew. This might have been so due to the stew style preparation of this meat in this very particular area.

I am not making moral, ethical, or aesthetic arguments against eating dogs. People can and do eat all sorts of things in a pinch, that's not the issue.

The issue as I see it is that Thailand gets dumped on for a practice that is outlawed and confined to a small minority of the population; the vast majority despise eating dog and are revolted by it.

In mainland China they are ranching (breeding for meat) St.Bernards and the Swiss are very upset. As well they should be.

In Thailand, St Bernards are beloved and valued pets of the wealthy (no one else can afford to buy imported breeds and in the case of large breeds, feed them.)

Personally I keep 5 Thai ridgeback dogs. They are well cared for and well fed, and clean. Thus I am well ahead of His Majesty's advice and have been for 5 years. He is quite right, these are smart dogs and worth caring for.

The quality of reportage in the Bangkok POST is now so poor that I would not take anything said there at face value.

The law against dog-as-food was passed only a few years ago, and stemmed from pressure from the Crown Princess (a well known animal lover) and from foreign attention and criticism. I can find out but I am unaware of any exceptions to the law. C'mon. In Sakhon Nakhon the dogs are hung up, skinned alive and beaten to death (to tenderize.)  It is cruel. No one tortures pigs, cattle, goats, or chickens that way.

Anyway, the dog is a domestic pet and helpmate of humans and long before we emerged as a species, of apes as well. "Man's best friend" deserves better treatment than he gets in Sakhon Nakhon. Eating dog is an anachronistic holdover from famine days in Asis -- China and Korea as well as SEA. Animals domesticated as friends are not the same as cattle domesticated as food.

I was once given some advice on one of my fist Business Trips to Asia.

ěDo not make judgements on Asian Culture, just accept that things are different and neither way is ěright or wrongî.

On the same trip I was taken to a Restaurant in VíNam and given ědogî, which I politely tried and eat as much as I could stomach.  My Asian colleges complemented me on my attitude, and realised that despite being uncomfortable I did not offend the guy who had bought the dinner and who had probably spent a weekís salary in the process.

Dog, in VíNam is considered a delicacy and is not cheap, but not an experience on my recomendation list.
