I have been to Maru on a couple of occasions.
It is actually located between sois 3 and 5 (6 is on the other side of the road). It is or can be expensive but there is no doubt it is rated the best Japanese restaurant by the Japanese. I have asked a number of Japanese what they think about the place and to name other good Japanese restaurants but they are simply not prepared to look passed Maru.
I have to say that I prefer Aoi in Emporium or Tsunami in the Marriott for high end Japanese although I am sure that the average Japanese expert would say that I am paying for style over substance.
I know a couple of Japanese experts who are rung up by the restaurant and told about the special imports they have just had flown in. Great service but I am not that convinced that I am that enamoured by imported fresh octopus eye or whatever.
If you know and really like Japanese food I am sure it is the place to go but I find it difficult to get too excited.

Wow, I am really impress you responded so quickly. I have tried Tsunami before and it was pretty good. I thought they might change the name, however they haven't indicated they would. Is Maru a set menu or do you just order a la carte? Is it on Sukhumvit or in one of the Soi's?

Sukhumvit Soi 55 - Thonglor - between sub soi 3 and 5. Set menu or a la carte.
If the person knows their Japanese they will be impressed - if not they will think you are stupid (a bit like BGs really).

I only know Japanese for all the Japanese food  Outside of the restaurant my Japanese is not that good. However, when I am in Tokyo Japanese people always come and ask for direction in the subway. I find that hilarious since I only know the Yamanote line and barely gets around.

Tried this place the other night. It is expensive by Bangkok standards. It is the best sushi I have ever had, even by Japanese standards. I had the A La Carte sushi combo and every piece of fish was exquisite. Only cost 2k which in the U.S is nothing for quality sushi. The service charge and tax is 17% which is kind of high. However, I could find no fault with the quality of food. It is on Thonglor soi 3. Highly recommend it if you have couple of Gs to spend for good sushi.

Went back again with my friend the other night. I had the Chirashi set which was pretty good. The same sushi combo I had the other night was not so good. For some reason the Anago was completely dry and the other nigiri pieces was also not as good. I guess the moral of the story is that every restaurant has it's off days. The sushi place at the airport in Narita was comparatively better than this place. Anyway, when this place is ON it's pretty good, however when it's down it is not worth the money.
