Cheers guys,

Are there any good resturants that are not a chain and offers some very autentic Japanse food (like the kind of place where you will see the Japanse eating)

Perhaps the most highly recommended Japanese restaurant by the Japanese is Maru on Thonglor Soi 3. I asked 2 Japs there which was there top 3 Japanese restaurants and they both said they only had one - Maru.

I though the sushi/sashimi at Koi was poor but the hot dishes are excellent.

The Japanese at the Conrad has an 'all you can eat' sashimi/sushi lunch for something like Bt650.

Aoi, opposite Fuji, in Emporium is also pretty good.

Hey!! diegobangkok,

Thanks for the info.

Do you have a name for this resturants?

I also do not spare any expence on sushi.

In my opinion you always pay a little extra for good sushi.

Cheers

hi. sorry i'm not a wealth of precise info on this. the sushi place at jw marriott is called tsunami, and it's generally located off the nana bts, between sois 4 and 2. I prefer the japanese restaurant at the westin sukhumvit grand, but I don't remember the name of the restaurant. it's on the 7th or 8th floor - next to all the other restaurants at the hotel. and it's quite good indeed. I highly recommend it (again, not cheap). westin is generally located between the nana and asok bts stops (closer to the latter) ; near robinsons dept store on the odd side of sukhumvit. tell us how it is.

By far the best Japanese Restaurants must be Oishi whit the biggest outlet inside Siam Discovery, on the second floor I believe.
Huge buffets are waiting on an all U can eat basis. I never skip going there at least once each time I'm in town. Yummy yummy !

Ever seen a Japanese person in / at Oishi??

I haven't.....mind you...I wouldn't know decent sushi if I was slapped around the face with it, but I do know my Japanese neighbours are very picky about where they eat.

I went into a place on Silom Soi 6 (about 30 yards down the soi on the left) that seemed pretty authentic. Quite a few Japanese in there at lunch time when I was there.

Prices are pretty steep though.

Would that be AOI? I had several great dinners there with my Japanese partners. They have also a branch at Emporium.

I was told also by a Japanese friend that the soba noodles at Utaandon at Emporium and World Trade Center (or whatever it is called now) are quite good enough, although I could not figure out if he meant "good enough for him" or "good enough for me, poor barbarian gaijin".

Anyway, lots of Japanese people in both places.

What utter bullshit. Oishi is the worst! A Japanese (which it isn't even) Macdonalds ie fast food shite! You have to be in and out within a set period. The food is crap. Recent well publicised episodes included a mass food poisoning and setting fire to a customer!

If buffets are your thing, try the Japanese Restaurant in the Fortune Blue Wave Hotel on Ratchada. Note the superior ambience, service and above all quality of food.

Oshi is the worst agreed and AOI in the Emporium is OK, but it has too much the authentic Japanese feel of that of a Japanese cafeteria style where they cram you in one eating area with no privacy at all.

The place at the JW (Tsu) is ok, but they should be arrested for their prices, highway robbery. Some of their sushi selections go for $50.00 USD. You could easily spend $500.00 USD on a meal for 2.

The place at the Westin is good, in fact I need to revisit it as I had not been there since it was the Grand Pacific. Hopefully prices are not that out of line.

"Slapped across the face with it" LOL Nope! And you never will see them woofing it down at Oishi, either.

To crack really fine gems out of their mouths isn't easy, either. Had a perfect example occur this weekend. A Japanese wine connoisseur couple have opened their own restaurant/wine bar near the upper Sukh.

I stumbled upon it several weeks back and didn't eat there until this past week. Menu selection amounts to twelve items only. But each is cooked and presented flawlessly. The ambiance and food were so good I was back within the week for seconds.

As I left that second time- and with this thread on my mind- I was engaged in a conversation with the owner chef and turned it into a query for where they eat great Sashimi [since there is none on her menu I thought it would be a breeze]. She couldn't give me an answer where to go. Not one place. And I really think she was being polite and trying to think of one. But nevermind, I will be back an make the inquiry again, and again, and again if I have to to get the low-down on the goods.

yes, quite right. friend of mine spent nearly $1000 usd there one night, and for only him and his date! but it's quality is pretty good. still, I prefer the place at the westin, especially their private rooms...the waitresses are a delight as well.

there is also a japanese place on the 3rd floor of the landmark hotel that i've heard is good, but haven't tried it for myself. any reviews? particularly regarding th sushi.
