d'sens top floor (24) of Dusit Thani was fantastic. Wine list of over 1800 bottles was the size of an encylopedia. Service was the best I ever had at any restaurant in Thailand. Bring lots of cash bill was 14K THB for 3 people with only 1 bottle of wine for 2K THB.

If you go to the bathroom you can piss all over Bangkok, same with the girls bathroom. I wonder how many TG are doing that?

Do not take any TG that do not appreciate French food. No Thai food on the menu.

try a l' etage. Sukhumvit soi 39. Very good food, excellent wine list and price quality the best you can get.

Tell them you were sent from GLOW and I am sure they will give you a 10% discount.

OK I am providing this info for just once in my life to beat “Deep File” to a restaurant in Bangkok. Being that this place has only been opened for three days I may have a fighting chance, but I am not counting on it. I wish this review can be the caliper of Deep File’s, but that is not going to happen. In fact because that I was heavily intoxicated I have very little to write about except that it has excellent food.

Well OK first the location. It is down Sukhumvit, Soi 19 Here are the contact details:

Le Beaulieu
50 Sukhumvitt Soi 19
Bangkok 10110
At the Sofitel Residence

Phone: 02-204-2004

The chef “Herve Frerard” was formerly of the Ascot whereas he tells it, he was always limited in budget to the ingredients that he was allowed to buy. Apparently, he even offered to invest in the Ascot restaurant so he could be allowed the freedom to prepare food to his standards, but they were not interested hence the new place of which he said he is very happy.

To me it is always about the chef and finding those passionate about food in Bangkok is rare just as find a TG passionate about sex. (I had to throw in my sex comparison in here as this is a Pussy forum).

As you can see from the pics. Nice stone tables with metal blinds on the window so it will pass Deep File’s flammability test.

Now Jack Attack, Bimmher and I went there after consuming many drinks at the BTF RT on Friday. We were starving, Jack Attack suggest to Herve that he just bring us some good wine and good food of which he did and we never looked at the wine list or menu.

I did manage to see the nice wine cellar which is all glass and filled, so I would imagine the selection is good, but I tell you the wine he selected was one of the best wines that I had in Bangkok. I will be returning this week to have another bottle along with getting the name of it.

Herve prepared some appetizer that was excellent and the main course was a beef dish that was prepare with wine. I attempted to use my knife, but it fell right through the meat and I just had to use my fork to devour the rest of the food. It was served on a bed of mash potatoes.

Desert was a rich chocolate item with a side of lemon sherbet.

I do not know the price of anything except as JA snagged the bill. I think he did say the wine was 3200 THB.
Now being only opened 2 days there were only a couple of other people in there, but with the quality of the food it probably will be filling up fast. There are not too many tables and reservations would be recommended in the future.

I am sure JA can add some additional details to this review, but this place definitely gets a thumbs up from me.

Gentlemen... I am deeply offended that you excluded me from this august gathering of culinary critics. You are not to let this happen again....

DeepFile... we only did it to once beat you to the critique of new locale... never to be done again!!

As TU mentioned it is hard to give a proper review when you are tanked but the food was excellent. Foie gras was first course and it was as good as you get in France. Second was veal 'cheeks' and they absolutely were as tender and moist as any TG patootie and then some. Dessert was a chocolate molten cake that seemed to evaporate off of all our plates.

The place wasn't cheap, but the food was worth it and the selected wine- a red bordeaux was wonderful. Cuisine is billed as Mediterranean- French and is really excellent.

Check it out as it is tucked away down the soi and quite private. It would make for a great place for a tryst and if the female invovled likes western food, she will certainly respond to the surroundings!

My own best is "Le Bouchon" in Patpong.

Otherwise, if into travelling for your French dinner, try either "Le Silapa" or "Le Nadao" in Vientiane (Laos). The best French food at this end of the planet, at prices that almost beat the standard junk at McDonalds!

I was pleasantly surprised to find a free wifi signal at Beaulieu - perhaps not essential for a restaurant, but much appreciated... especially at lunch. This is a small restaurant, seating about 30 diners, but tables are adequately spaced and 3 of them have excellent sofas (supporting JA's remarks about trysting). The theme is light blue, with marble tabletops, cotton napkins, good stemware.. there is also an adjoining bar. Attractive, except that the aircon was set too low (likely related to the fact that the building is new).

The menu is "med"... a blend of Italian and French, with some other bits thrown in. It is limited to about 10 appetizers and 10 mains, of which 5 are meat like duck veal, lamb and beef tenderloin while 5 are seafood like the ubiquitous "sea bass" and salmon.

The wine list (about 100 labels) is solid in terms of breadth (French, Italian, Oz, Chilean, NZ, etc) but lacks depth in some categories... like affordable Oz reds. The pricing is on the steep side, and the corkage charge (at 500b) is much above market for this type of property.

The caprese salad was a mixed effort... excellent mozzarella, but layered (for color effect) with yellow tomato slices that were flacid and could not stand up to the cheese... another case of "style over substance", since plenty of excellent red tomato options are available in the market and are better suited to pairing with mozzarella.

The sauteed foie gras is indeed excellent... fresh, and cooked correctly. However, the vague cinnamon spicing detracts from the dish and the accompanying baked apple was mushy (the wrong texture with foie gras) and lacked the necessary acidity to balance the richness of the liver. The chef also serves it in a deep bowl, making it difficult to access the food.

[This is an increasingly common blunder in the "trendy food" world that deserves to die an early death. Like many trends, it does not improve on the traditional approach... I cannot imagine why the common plate that has served the human race for millenia needs improvement, but there is a determined cadre of people out there in the restaurant industry who are rushing to populate the consumer's table with new shapes and materials (like square plates of glass) that may be visually attractive but which only frustrate a diner trying to enjoy the food. Many plate shapes have become downright silly, and when combined with kinky flatware with strange unbalanced handles the long suffering customer encounters a situation where the utensils will not even rest on the edges of the plate... and must be continually retrieved from the food where gravity deposits them.]

But I digress.... again; back to the food. I found the warm chocolate cake pleasant enough, but there was a slightly granular texture to the creamed chocolate which prevents me from giving the dish top marks. Overall I would rate the place as a useful venue if one is in the area, particularly if you are able to reserve a couch. The meal will be above average, but nothing to make a journey for.... and the value for money ratio is weak relative to other venues in this category.

As I departed (or tried to) I was alarmed to discover that the back exit door of the lobby was locked, and the staff did not seem to have a key or recognize that they were in violation of both common sense and building codes (such as they are). Hopefully this will be corrected.

TU... now that is a field report!!! DF may have been second to report but it is much more comprehensive then our drunken ramblings.

I agree about the funky plates- wattup widdat??

I think I need to go back with less blood-alcohol content to either agree or disagree with the rest of the report!

I didn't see a main that was compelling enough to order. Moveover, on my initial visit to a new venue I often choose "benchmark" dishes... those that are common to most venues of the same persuasion and give a snapshot idea of how a chef treats these standard preparations. (For an Italian venue these would be items like foie gras, caprese, pasta carbonara, ravioli... tiramisu...) You get the idea. In general I have found that a kitchen turning out correct foie gras (as one example) is very likely to turn out most of their offerings to the same standard.

JA... in response to your earlier question... Don't bother testing Cafe des Arts on Suk 31... unless you enjoy Bella. This new name is simply an annex of Bella Napoli, and although the chairs and ambience are slightly improved the menu and wine list are identical. What appear to be two separate locations actually share an inside door... they also share the same lack of culinary talent and imagination.
