I realize I am beginning to sound a bit strident on this. And I have to start moving toward the positive and away from the negative.
I honestly believe that anyone who possesses the tiniest bit of a sense of adventure can get a WHOLE lot more out of the experience than what is available in the Sukhumvit/Patpong/Pattaya zones. And gaining the tiniest bit of exposure to Thai culture, they will be the better for it.
Why should I care? I guess because I walk around embarassed to be American, in light of all the bad behavior that farangs exhibit. I would like to be greeted as a welcome guest AUTOMATICALLY, rather than after the discovery that I speak Thai, like Thailand, and don't fit the stereotype.
Believe it or not, I think it used to be better: Americans were seen as good guys, and our country was looked at as a friendly one. In light of the current war (which I reluctantly support), we need to be the best possible ambassadors we can.
And you raise the question: "...but what is [the true essense of Thailand]? Well, as you state, we are farangs, and can not know...BUT we can look beyond the distortions of the tourist trade to find out...and be enriched in the process.

Is FoodLand and Took Lae Dae at Sukhumvit Soi 5 still operating ?
Read somewhere, a long time ago, that the building was supposed to be demolished and turn into a hotel.
I would appreciate an update on this......

Yes it is still there and so is the Took Lae Dee on Soi 16 at the Foodland there. My wife and I go there regularly now as we find it nicer and better than the one on Soi 5.
