griffin, I understand irony, that's why I started this thread about the good old American hamburger on a pussy board in Thailand. If it wasn't for the US hamburger and the GI comming here 40 years ago. You would'nt have a airport to fly into nor would you have nearly as many hotels to stay in. Manhatten, Nana, Beverely hotel and many others were all built to house GI's stationed here or on R & R during the Vietnam war. ÝUS hamburgers funded many infrastructue project's in Thailand. O , one thought about the 7% of American's having a passport, way back in 1917 very few American's had passports but we went to Europe anyway and stopped your great grandfathers from killing each other and I seem to remember another time when we passport less American's came back to Europe and saved you from Herr Hitler. So when a American brother ask's where he can get a Thanksgiving Day turkey dinner or a hamburger if you don't like the thread; SHUT UP and move on . SGT BigDUSA Vietnam vet PS: If it wasn't for hamburger eating American's you would not have the internet and the list goes on......

I normally don't care much fo McDonnalfs, but In the 90'ies I used to stay with a bunch of other guys from work in Hotel Montien next to Patpong. Obviously strategic choise, considering tha some of my colleagues were Japanese. Anyway, we used to find that the Mc Donnalds on the corner sells "Samura--burger" with chese and some kind of sour creme. I asked and was told that's because of a large Japanese community ion Thailand associated with japanese low-cost mfg being done there. We used to bump in to each other there after mid-night before hunting for the BG to bring to the room. IT was fantastic. ( The Burger always, the girls varied) As I stay in Sukumvit area now on my trips I don't get to go there anymore, hopefully the burger still exists. The funny thing though, was that McDonnalds in Tokyo close to our office there did not serve these burgers, I could never get one. Go and try one for me somebody and I'll have one on my next trip.

The cheeseburger at the Nana Hotel coffee shop deserves a mention. Really greasy, even the buns. And not pricey. Big Bill's long list of specialty burgers at the Derby King (Patpong 1) is a;most certainly the biggest variety of burger and although Big Bill has long been banished to darkest Phuket, Derby King's quality is still very good. Although I haven't tried, I bet that Neil's Tavern has a great (and REAL MEAT) burger, although I'd guess the price will be in the same (high) class as Hard Rock. In the ambitiously large category, New Cowboy (Soi 22 Sukhumvit) has humongous burgers in the 1/2 to 1 lb class. HOWEVER they are crumbly, so you end up with an open faced sandwich mostly...can't really recommend their burgers on that grounds alone. This was true back in the days of the original owner Grant Francisco, and it's still true today when the place has been in the hands of Ivar (Two Vikings, Takara Massage etc) for more than 10 years. Other items on the menu (done by Bob Bone) used to be spectacylar Tex Mex like the Chicken Fried Steak but now the kitchen is deep frying shoe leather for that dish...so you ought to give New Cowboy a miss if you are looking for anything more than drinks. Texxan (Washington Square) is better for Chicken Fried Steak.

Wartime hotels built as military billets: Grace (Soi 3): BOQ (ironic isn't it?) Windsor (Soi 20): NCOQ Rex: CIA (this one was torn down not too long ago but was on Sukhumvit proper) Nana already was mentioned and this list is not exhaustive.

BTW I dunno if the fellow with the burger cart at Nana Plaza is in any way related to the following events or not. BUT it was an American expat named Richard, a very nice hard working fwllow, who thought up the idea of a burger cart doing high grade burgers inside Nana Plaza in 1989. Within 6 months he was run out of business by the Labor Department and a Thai took over the burger cart. As a friend of Richard's I would be hesitant to patronize the present cart as I can't be sure it is NOT still the same son of a bitch behind it, as ripped him off all those years ago.

I was going bite and a post a response to BigDís remarks, but to be honest I am totally shocked that anyone could write such laughable garbage. So I decided to leave him alone in Disney Land. Ps. this does not count as a post.
