Hey Bono, if you like Ceasar's salad and you do go to the NY at the JW make sure you order it. It is prepared like an event at your table where you are offered a pre-taste of the dressing like a fine wine before they serve it to you. Also, the JW offers one of the finest Cosmopolitans in BKK. If you order it from the downstairs lobby they may not know what you are ordering (maybe my US accent), but they do have them and they have a great kick. The downstairs lobby bar is also a great people watching spot as you can see all the eye candy being trotted upstairs with their new found boyfriends. You can see first hand how TG friendly the JW is.

If your heading to Pattaya There is a steakhouse on Walking Street about 25 meters past the FLB bar on the left. Excellent t-bone for 300 and the seafood is first class.

Bono... Neil's Tavern is not good enough to do both. Yes, it's less expensive.. but there's a reason. The ambience is "tired"... they have a formula that has worked since 1969 for both food and service, which never changes. The Ruam Rudi branch is a little better than the Asoke, but neither is anything special (they get a lot of business from the US embassy crowd that live/work in that area... a kind of "captive audience" that is not very demanding). At first glance they appear to have a lot of steak selections, but a closer look will show that the only Australian they offer is tenderloin... done with about 20 different toppings or combos with seafood. OZ steaks run 650-750. Their US steaks are frozen and are priced by the gram (silly). At 3.30baht/gr a ribeye will run 850-1,000 and comes with fries, a dill pickle (yup, I'm not making this up) and a green salad that is so small and unispired that they shouldn't bother. The steaks are tasty enough... but nothing else is. Deserts are also nothing special and the wine list is very weak. New York Steakhouse at the Marriott is very spendy, but definitely in a different class. The steaks are USDA prime, and flown in fresh.. this makes them more expensive (1,500+) but a far better feed if you are really into steak. If you want to stay under b1,000 you can go with the OZ steaks, which are also excellent. The place is classy, with very sharp (and attractive) young ladies serving table. The oysters are flown in fresh, and the Phuket lobster is also superb if you're with someone who is not a carnivore. For a special event meal, this is the place.... the only one that is recognizable as a US style "steak house", with a lively atmosphere. Do the warm chocolate souffle for desert....and book in advance. I would rate Madison (at the Regent Hotel) second only to the NY. Meat is USDA prime, prices about the same but ambience is "high tech Asian" (designed by Tony Chi). The other food offerings and sides lean more to Italian here than the other places mentioned. An excellent steak can also be had at the Park Avenue on the corner of Ploenchit and Chidlom... these guys also fly in USDA prime; both ambience and quality of food are superior to Neil's. A piano/bass duet plays live most evenings, which is a different touch... they are pleasant and not too loud. Less expensive than the Marriott. For steak with a view, the Rib Room is also a good bet... on the 32nd floor of the Landmark Hotel... but it can be painfully quiet when the hotel is not busy. Hamilton's at the Dusit Thani (mentioned by Loquint), and the Fireplace Grill (Meridien Hotel basement) are both very good also, depending on where you find yourself... you should be able to get a table as a "walkin" at any of these.... If you drink wine with your steak, do yourself a favor and pick up a nice bottle at a supermarket. Wine is horrendously overpriced in Thailand because of duties/taxes... and very few places have decent wine lists. Any restaurant will open your bottle (corkage typically 400-500). (No... I don't work for the Marriott, but I dine out a lot on business)

I am not an American - so I cannot claim to be any kind of expert on Steaks . But I have eaten my fair share of Steaks ( in other countries & also in Thailand ) . I am therefore quite suprised to see that no one has mentioned "DUKES" as yet . This is a medium sized restaurant in an old style building with a very quaint interior - located around the middle of Soi Thonglor ( Soi 55 of Sukhumvit ) . The Steaks are truly delicious and the variety is staggering - and the prices are around B500 or so . The ambience is very cosy which makes this a great place for a delicious yet not too expensive Steak meal with a female companion .
