no idea why they would call it a gauntlet??

Running the gauntlet was an american Indian thing.. the person running would go between two lines of women/men and as the person went thru the person would be hit with hands, sticks, etc.. many did not survive and it has become an idiom for going thru a difficult situation...

does not apply here??

the closest thing to a gauntlet in Thailand is trying to go from Silom to Suriwong on PP1  ;-)

The example provided by Oaktoad seems identical to the one I made in this thread.

http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=20&topic=26&start=10

As you can see these practises have a lot in common.

The similarity with running a gauntlet in LOS is that you are 'being hit on' by otherwise lady's enticing you to enter their bar or go-go or being hit by male's trying to get you into a restaurant for instance.

Like I said in the other post, if I am wrong about it speak up.

Cheers,
MickyK

Just where on soi 8 are all these ladies that one must run by..

I get the sense you have never been there or perhaps are referring to another soi 8, not the one on sukhumvit??

Oaktoad,

To recognize it as a 'gauntlet' it requires one to disengage their Alley Cat Autopilot long enough to experience something of the surroundings on Soi 8.

The 'gauntlet' refers to the fact that the bar-beers (We4U, and another, if I remember correctly) have the approach to the soi covered, and IF you ever spent any time with any of the girls working at one of those bars, you will NEVER be able to get past them without comments, yells, and catcalls.  Kind of a little joke, if you're equipped to appreciate such things.

Exhaustive enough, or do we need to trace the etimology of the word 'gauntlet'?  Perhaps a joke diagram?

While I'm sure not everyone can lay claim to as much time in the blowjob bar as you do, a few of us have been around, just a bit.

Considering haam sup's comments, perhaps a more apt metaphor would be passing between the Scylla of We4U and the Charybdis of the other, unnamed bar.

But then that kind of gets away from the purpose of the thread; Indian food.

I'm still down with Mrs. Balbirs' - not only superior food, but she's on Soi 11/1, so no "gauntlet".

Actually, to get back to the REAL topic, Mrs Balbir's is great, but a bit more upscale than Malaysia Aunty.  The food is different, too.

I think the masala dosa was 45 baht, including rice, when she was on Soi 10.  I hope her rent hasn't gone up too much on Soi 8.  Drink and tip, and we are still under 100 baht.

Mrs. Balbir was more like 400THB including a beer and tip, with first class service and interior.

Only problem with Indian food in BKK is that you'll be hard pressed to find a TG who likes the stuff...the odor puts them off, and they find it too oily.  Exceptions exist.

I usually lose weight in Thailand, but staying on Soi 11, Mrs. Balbir, and Malaysia Aunty slow the process down...

Ham sup, your definition of a gauntlet is much less fussy than mine..

Soi 8 is one of the calmer places in Bkk.. from the corner to the subsoi where Aunties place is there are only some shops and food vendors.. a couple of massage parlors across the street, but they are very un pushy ..

I have been up and down that soi for the last 15 years and if you think it is "busy" then your definitions are much different than mine???

I guess for you a "gauntlet" is two old squaws, for me it would be 100 warriors as I am the John Wayne type

Oaktoad:

So is that John Wayne in "The Sands of Iwo Jima", or John Wayne in "The Shootist"?
