I developed a liking for durians when I was living in northern Thailand. Rule number one: all durians are not created equal, as the prices reflect. My favourite by far is Monthon (golden pillow), which is the most expensive one. It's not very smelly, its flesh is sweet and creamy, but not sticky, and the seed small. Rule number two: Steer clear of the small cheap durians like Channee (little monkey, I'm told). They're the ones that give durians a bad reputation, being very smelly. Also, the seed is large, and the flesh sticky. They are about one third the price of Monthons. Kanyaow (long branch) is a bit tastier but again, not nearly as good as Monthon. Rule number three: get the dealer to cut it open for you. It takes a special knife and learned skills. If you try to do it yourself, you'll end up with cuts on your hands from the spines and ruined fruit. Current rates/kg I'm told: Monthon: 45 baht/kg Kanyaow: 20-25 baht/kg Chanee: 15 baht/kg Bottom line: steer clear of all but Monthon (or have I overlaboured that point?) And thanks to the TG who helped with this thesis! As far as other SE Asian durians go, I believe most durian exports originate in Thailand, since Thai durians are considered the best anywhere.

My advice on Durian, as told to me by a very wise man: "If it smells like sh_t, looks like sh_t, and tastes like sh_t.....it must be sh_t." Durian, the sh_t that grows on trees. Krypto

Durian is described as eating gods own fruit in a urinal. It is a very tastey fruit, after awhile you dont worry about the smell, even now when I smell it, it is ok, cos you know the taste sensation around the corner.

One of the TG I was with on my last trip bought a bag of durian chips for me. The dried chips didn't smell and had almost no taste to them. I wanted to try fresh durian and the smell does not bother me but she would not let me go near them. I find it funny that one of the rules at the Manhattan hotel is "No durians in the room" and it is posted on the door of your room.
