was told by a bg from there, if you eat dogs regularly, dogs are afraid of you.

This is true. I've been eating dogs for years and everytime I go into a bar the dogs run for cover.

Just read through the whole thread (must have read it before long ago) and was amazed that no one realy had seen what goes on in the north eastern villages.Upto 20 years ago eating dog was wide spread but as people have become more affuent this has just been left to the very poor.
The lady next door always has several dogs.. one when a cute puppy used to go short on food as the others were bigger and was often hanging around the back door of my house checking for scraps.Having lost a dog myself not long before I stupidly used to feed it left overs. After a few weeks I was due to return to Europe for a few months.
On my return was pleased to get a big welcome from the dog she looked in perfect health.About a week later no dog...found out it had been misbehaving stealing shoes to chew etc and had been sold for 60b for meat!

On asking around found out that dogs that kill chickens or bite children etc get given to the poorest families in the village for meat.Nothing is wasted.

As for eating animals well its true that the only 4 legged things they dont eat is the table and chairs.I've seen them eat rats (very common) civet, snakes, lizards etc.

When they kill a bull nothing is wasted right up to the shit in the intestines!Go and look on a butchers slab in any market and in the buckets at the back. You will see things never sold in the west (well at least not this century)
Why get upset about a third world country doing what they have always done and will do until they eventually gain the riches we take for granted.

This thread made me think of an exchange I had with NanaHottie on Koh Samed. We were sitting at a beach restaurant that served curries and one of the dishes we got was lamb. It was OK, just a little tough:

CG: "How do you like the lamb?"
NH: "not lamb, dog"
CG: "dog?"
NH: 'this is dog!"
CG: "no way, this is not dog."
NH: "dog! you ever eat dog?"
CG: "no",
NH: "how you know what dog taste like?",
CG: "I don't"
NH: "so how can you say this not dog?"
CG: "sweetheart, you ever eat dog?"
NH: "yes, and THIS is same. This is dog!"
CG: "OK"

Maybe it was dog?! 5555

It happened one time to me that some friends of my wife gave me some food and told me after I had eaten it that it was dog. Guess I can be happy that they didnīt offered me a drink with yaba just to see me tripping.
Well I gotta say, the meat was not bad and who cares what it was. On the ranger training course we ate some stuff that I wouldnīt eat again if I not have to. I also eat gillies (these insects, you know), but since I know that they are caught with a lots of chemical stuff I am a little more cautious although it might save me some money if I will glow in the dark. Donīt know why Thailands industry is so inefficent in energy use. Just give the workers this food and you can save the costs of light. Maybe if you will give them enough of this crap the machines will run when they stand near them. who knows?

Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 26 December 2006 :-

Boom in dog meat sales to neighbouring countries
=====================================
The trade in dog meat across the Mekong River is booming as the meat is believed to help keep the body warm, a rumour that apparently started in Vietnam.

Exports from Thailand to Vietnam have risen to 30,000 dogs per month.

As the Chinese New Year Festival (normally celebrated in February) approaches, yellow dogs were the most sought after and most expensive. The Vietnamese believe that eating yellow dog meat will bring them good luck. This belief has sent the price up to Bt4,500 per dog.

A former dog-meat seller in Nakhon Phanom, who asked not to be named, said the dog-meat trade in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam was supplied mainly by a group of wholesalers at Ban Tha Rae village in Sakon Nakhon and four groups of retailers in Mukdahan province.

The Mukdahan retailers were linked to the Ban Tha Rae wholesalers through a woman named Daeng who ran a dog-meat business as a cooperative.

Most dogs sold at Ban Tha Rae are mainly brought from Lop Buri, Ratchaburi, and Prachin Buri. However, not many dogs come from Bangkok due to the large number of dog lovers there.

The Ban Tha Rae wholesalers set the wholesale price at Bt250 per dog while the retail price was Bt350.

The price rises dramatically once they cross the Mekong River, the former dog-seller said, Laotian traders buy dogs for Bt600 each in Thailand and then sell them on the Laos side for Bt1,300.

The price goes even higher when the dogs reach Vietnam, at about Bt2,000 for a normal-coloured dog while it is about Bt3,500 for a black dog.

Meanwhile, Border Patrol Police commander Lt-Colonel Suwit Sangkamanee admitted that it was difficult to arrest dog smugglers because many had valid dog rearing permits and transportation licences and the required vaccination certificates. He said the dog-meat trade route begins in Nakhon Phanom's Ban Phaeng and Tha Uthen districts, which leads to restaurants in North Vietnam.

Chusak Pongpanich, Nakhon Phanom's animal quarantine station chief, said about 400 dogs seized from smugglers were being held at animal quarantine stations in Nakhon Phanom, Nong Khai and Mukdahan.

It is not just the very poor who eat all those animals in Isaan (or the North), as one poster, chaiyapoon, mentioned above, though I agree with many of his other statements which are simple fact. It's not just because they're poor they eat anything... fact is, they like it.

In my visits to various villages, I've eaten a lot of that stuff (dogs, snakes, mice, all kinds of bugs and spiders) and some is OK, some I don't like. But it's not part of my cultural food, so I don't hunger for it or care if I eat it or not; I have no acquired taste for it. The lao kao probably helped get it down as well. Yeck!

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 14 April 2007 :-

Police catch man off to sell dog meat
===========================

Chiang Rai - The trade in dog meat appears to be thriving in Chiang Rai during the Songkran festival period.

Muang district police yesterday caught a man driving a pickup truck loaded with dogs and charged him with illegal trading of animals.

The police were alerted to the man's activities by the continuous whines of dogs in the back of the truck.

When the police asked the driver Chai Kaisi, 49, whether he had a permit to transport animals, he said he was carrying 13 dogs to a buyer in the province's Thoeng district who had offered 24 baht for a kilogramme of dog meat.

He told the police that the dog meat order had been placed for the traditional Thai New Year break.

Man's best friend is increasingly ending up on the dinner table because consumers believe eating it will keep them warm and sexually active. Many stray dogs are captured and slaughtered by traders.

In Thailand, the dog meat trade is in a legal grey area. While the slaughter of dogs is not banned - in fact, operators need not seek a licence to do so because dogs are not covered under the Control on Animal Slaughtering and Meat Distribution Act - they may run foul of legislation forbidding cruelty to animals. But in practice this is difficult to enforce.
