hey guys,
when in BKK I used to meet up with my friends at Bobby's Arms on Soi 4...I know it has closed, but I heard something about it re-opening in a hotel somewhere.
does anyone have any knowledge of this?
I wanted to throw a small party so that I could see all my friends at once on my next trip and if bobby reopened would probably have it there...if not Irish exchange will work..

Bobby's Arms, Irish Exchange... These desolate dark dungeons which accurately depict the environment of some crowded pub in a Northern or Western country deep in the despair of an erotic famine--and frequented mainly by beer crazed English 'teachers' during their two-year stint in a film "My Life as a Drunk in Bangkok"... also starring the drunken farang women 'teachers' too! Egads... This is where you think it's a good idea to set up a party on your trip back to Bangkok?.. Wow, we have a pretty different concept of going out and having a good time with friends!
... Like if that's what I organized, my friends would say "I thought we were friends, you cruel bastard! What have you done to my evening in the City of Angels?!"

to each there own...I moved back after the tsunami in early 2005 (my job with chateau de loei was pretty much shot) and these were just places my mates and I hung out.
most were and still are english teachers and great guys..but my wife will be at the "get together" as will many of my mates wives/GF's and a place with femmes may not be the best..afterall I would like to catch up and take photo's with most.
they may not be your places, and I respect that and have absolutly no problem with you at all, but planned to drop like 8 or 9000baht on bar/small appitizers so all my old mates could get drunk or at least put a start to getting drunk and playing some pool and tell stories.
I could do vertigo at banyan tree but that is saved for my 5 best friends/significant others that I have promised dinner to my first night back (damn thats gonna be pang mak).
I think my friends are more interested in seeing me and mates they have not hung out with since I used to throw parties at dives like "wongs" and "Bobbies" when I came into bkk from phuket.
BTW...I plan to invite any fellow BTF members to my get together.

Sorry for my extreme reaction, atl. I just haven't had great experiences in those places and always felt that I was trapped and there was little way out 555 so I haven't been back for years. But I'm American and I don't identify with the "pub" scene. Though some Americans do, maybe many for all I know.
I remember Wong's, which is quite different because it was a real dive, because of the eccentric owner a nice guy and his great VDO collection. I went there a few times and it was a different feeling then.
Each to us own, you're right, and pardon me for criticizing (I was criticizing the venues and their usual denizens though I wasn't criticizing you of course) without making a suggestion. For parties like that I've always preferred the Lumpini Night Bizarre. Sit back from the speakers but close enough to see the pretty dancers when you want to. The Thai wives will enjoy the show and the music. Plenty of beer varieties. Different Thai food, plus giros by an Egyptian and pizza made by an Italian guy. And the beer waitresses are in ascending order of beauty according to their beer price, though all their costumes are a hit. Even the Beer Chang girls, though not as pretty as say the Saporro girls in their black and silver mini skirts, are friendly and give you a great vibe. I mention all this because it just provides an eye candy when you like it that's relatively safe as the place is swarming with them. I always like to have lots of pretty women around; it improves my mood; whereas just a lot of drunk guys around makes my mood dark. It's always been in my experience a fun place for the kind of parties you're talking about, and at a good price. My two cents, if it helps.
Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have a good time and I hope you do.

sorry to post here, am just wondering if anyone can recommend good Thai restaurant.. I have not been back to bangkok for years.. used to frequent Lemongrass and Le Dalat Indochine, but not sure if they were any good still...
