My selection of the best French tables: 1. LE NORMANDIE - Oriental Hotel (neck tie, jacket required). By far the best table and service 2. D'SENS - Dusit Thani Hotel Smart Casual 3. LE BANYAN - Sukhumvit Soi 8 Casual 4. LE BEAULIEU - Sofitel Residence, Sukhumvit Soi 19 Casual 5. L'INDIGO - Silom Soi Convent Great table for oisters, french cheeses and all specials upon arrival from France... Casual Other places: - Au saveur - thong lo soi 11: only so so - Le bouchon - patpong 2: way over-rated. Lives due to reputation but food is only average - Philippe - Sukhumvit Soi 39: Good but very pretentious; does not deliver what it pretends to be

L' Indigo is worth a few extra lines. Setting and service are fine and it is quite a cheap french cuisine option, it even has a lunch menu for a couple of hundreds baht, but it has been plagued by a couple of serious food poisonnings. Gave up this restaurant because of this reason than went back for again pleasant meals but again heard of food poisonning. Any more input on the topic ?

Hi, What is the pricing for these upscale french places like le normandie? Are price ranges comparable to Europe? 1 Michelin Star restaurant 6 course meal appr 3000THB p.p. without bev. Is it cheaper or more expensive. (Would guess wines are quite more expensive due to tax) Thanx Supreme

Quote: from Johann8 on 8:26 am on Jan. 17, 2009 Shisha, Hubbly Bubbly Places?
Try this place, Al-Majlis, it's on a sub-soi off Ekamai Soi 12. You can either smoke your shisha and have a cup of tea outdoors in the Garden area. When you are going there, look our the Praduu Spa sign. Here's the website. http://www.almajlis-tearoom.com/home.html

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 28 May 2010 :- Say 'Cheese!' and smile - A popular Bangkok favourite for nearly 30 years, there's more to Cheesecake House than its name proclaims ====================================================== Opened in 1983 and always keeping a fairly low profile, the humble-looking Cheesecake House on Sukhumvit Soi 39 can be regarded as one of the oldest and most cherished bakery-cum-restaurants in Bangkok. The name says it all on what its specialty is, but that doesn't mean that the rich and creamy desserts are the only reason why you should check it out. At 6:30pm on Monday, urban diners were seen flocking the 70-seater in order to fill up with some of the savoury entrees the restaurant had on offer. The big menu of Cheesecake House also lists a nice collection of drinks - juice, smoothies, fruit-infused teas and coffee - and a wide variety of quick, individual entrees like rice, noodle and pasta dishes. We passed on the likes of lemongrass sling, spiced pineapple juice and peach tea for the restaurant's best-selling banana strawberry smoothie (75 baht) which we found tangy rather than sweet. From the hundred or so entrees on the menu I asked the staff which one was the best-seller. The answer was fried seafood rice noodle with chilli paste (160 baht), a delightful dish for those who appreciate spicy, pungent dishes. It consisted of flat rice noodle stir-fried with roasted chilli oil, egg and tidbits of squid, mussels, shrimp and chicken, and proved to be very tasty. Another popular dish with regular customers is squid-ink spaghetti with salted beef, garlic and sweet basil (185 baht), and I found the combination of beef and black spaghetti very interesting. Though it looked quite spicy with red chillies and young peppercorns, the pasta was tossed with tender slices of marinated beef, so it wasn't too fiery for my five-year-old foodie and definitely won everyone's heart. For me, however, the most impressive of all was the ox tongue stew (160 baht) which came with warm jasmine rice. Compared to the different versions served in some famous Western-style Hainanese restaurants and those of most local restaurants, the Cheesecake House version falls nicely in the middle. The flavour of the gravy was subtle, not too mild nor overly sweet, while the meat was tender and yielded its full flavour.
