You're right, the fried silk worms were a bit pasty for my pallet. Will try the fried locusts next time I'm at Soi Cowboy (hopefully in the next two months or so). We got a photo of an older Isaan lady happily munching one down last time I was there. She first bit the legs off, one by one, then then head, then the rest. She looked like she was in bug heaven.
Another delicacy I like is deep fried giant shrimp heads. They take off the back end when you order sushi, but will fry the front part for you. The legs and antennae taste great, like pretzels. The eyes are a little wierd (I get a funny feeling when I eat 'em) and the innards a little mushy, but overall, quite good. My previous lady, a Korean, was really into 'em.

BTW, make sure your cockroaches are well cooked. They can harbor a nasty little critter (a virus I believe, I'll x-check my Mayo Clinic book) that can make you sick. So cook before munching.
