I noticed that her former location in Sukhumvit Plaza is looking pretty good these days. (that would be the brand new park being constructed on the corner of soi 10). It would be pretty funny if she grabbed a mobile cart and showed up cooking in the middle of that park. Even funnier if there was a big picture of a bulldozer on the front of said cart.

Update. A new Indian vegetarian restaurant has opened on the sub soi off Suk 8 where Malaysian Aunty used to be. They basically seem to have copied her menu completely, but put prices on basic vegatarian dishes by up to 100%! I gave it a miss.

I went to what appears to be the ex-Malaysia Aunties last night. My dad seems to be getting a bit senile and it has moved from Auntie Malaysia's to Mother Malaysia's to Mother Theresa's to the Dalai Lama's to the Pope's in the three months I have been here. I visited it as Malaysia Auntie's/Auntie Malaysia's and thought it was good, I think it's even better as an Indian. Not sure about the price increases but there wasn't much difference in the final bill from the previous times we visited. I called in about five times to see if it had reopened and wasn't disappointed this evening when I discovered that it finally had. I'm really not fussed if they copy the menu, you all seem to have liked the previous list of dishes and I don't see a problem with somebody else doing it better at the same location. The new owner/manager speaks very reasonable English and goes (if anything) a little too far out of his way to provide a reasonable service. We were given free popadums and Dahl because their order of Kingfisher hadn't come in and he still seemed genuinely sorry. Food was brilliant, the guy who is running the place is working his ass of, teaching the cooks and keeping customers happy at the same time. I see no reason to dump the place simply because the management has changed. I think things could get far better than before, it certainly seems to be their intention. Still by far the best curries in Bangkok as far as I'm concerned, see for yourself.

Anyone any news about if Malaysian Aunty has opened up at a new location in the last 12 months? For previous poster Mr Daddy's info - Malaysian Aunty was an Indian restaurant reflecting her ethnicity (a significant part of Malaysia's population is Indian) - surprising you did not know that simple fact when claiming to have been there before the new owners arrived! As another poster noted the price of many basic dishes doubled overnight - no thanks I want the original MA if I can get it.

I ate often at Malaysia Aunty's on soi 10 and in her new location on the first sub-soi to the left off soi 8. The soi 8 restaurant has been re-named Namuskaar. The new owner is doing a good job IMHO. The formerly open-air restaurant has been enclosed and air-conditioned and the food is delicious. It's open all afternoon, which is when I like to eat. Prices are a bit higher than in Aunty's time, but still less than at the other Indian restaurants on this soi. Recommended.

For some Malaysian food, you can find them at Kopi Tiam on Thonglor (between Soi 5 and Exotica). A small little restaurant, that serves a good range of Malaysian food. The offer Nasi Lemak (with Chicken of Beef Rendang), Laksa Lemak, Penang Laksa, Gado Gado, Rojak, Roti Chenai, etc. Another place is at the Loft (Level 7) at Central Chidlom. It's the first stall on your left just as you enter. It's called "Old Malaya" if I recall correctly, they have Char Kuay Teow, Mee Goreng, and an assortment of noodle dishes. Can't remember all of them. And for those looking for some Singapore food, there is a couple of Singapore Chicken Rice restaurants on Thonglor, near Soi 12 and Soi 16. I hear they serve Bak Kut Teh, as well, but on a certain only, I will check and update.

The Malaysian Aunty is still cooking in a dark and dingy soi running parallel to Suriwong. its called Soi Putha osot. Still reasonably priced and As delicious as ever.. though certain breads she used to server earlier are not on the menu anymore, since she has been somewhat incapacitated in one arm after an accident. still I make it a point that if I am supposed to pass by suriwong, I will stay hungry all day before I see her.

Hey Ricky, That soi is QUITE long, and runs almost to the river. Could you give us an idea of the nearest intersection? I, too, miss Malaysian Auntie's, having eaten there when she was on Soi 10, and a couple of times in soi 8. A former General Manager of the Grand President Hotel on Suk 11, used to join me (he was from Malaysia), and said it was the best he could find in BKK. thanks, hs

Uh, OK, never mind... I will now answer my own question, having trudged the length of the soi in question. It was, naturally, near the end of the soi, behind the 'Manoraa' Hotel. About 50M west of Thanon Mana Set, on Soi Putthaosot. Big ol' Love Me Tender sign on the corner... Aunty is doing well, looks great, and still serves great masala dosa, though the price is up a bit from the soi 10 days. Also, it is in a very Muslim neighborhood, and is halal, so no beer is served. Aunty says people bring their own beer, though, and she is OK with it. Don't know if her local customers would object, but I doubt it. It's a brisk walk from Sala Daeng, on a cool cloudy day, but there are cabs, tuk-tuks, and buses along Surawong, and it's a short walk from the corner of Surawong and Mana Set. I was really happy to see her doing well, and for the record, she had no idea what I was talking about when I asked her about her 'accident', as mentioned in another post. She is one of the ones who lost everything in the Soi 10 demolition debacle, but told me she was compensated by Chuvit, because she didn't try to inflate the damages. Good for her. hs

Great news that Malaysian Aunty is back, I used to eat their twice a week. In the new location it will be less frequent. When the new people took over at Soi 8 they essentially doubled the prices of basic vegetarian dishes, & relative to Aunty quality halved. I found much better value & quality to be had in the vicinity at Dosa King on Soi 19 or Komala's on Soi 20.
