New York Steak at the JW has it about as wrong as they could get it since the Mad Cow scare in the US. They immediately made a big point of removing US beef from their menu, blaming the "import ban". However, they are the only steakhouse in Bangkok that is not serving US beef... their position has more to do with being a big US multinational (read liability) than with the nominal ban on imports. As an alternative to the US beef (a contradiction in terms since that is their raison d'etre), they are offering Australian beef.... unfortunately they have selected a very high-end Australian beef grade that is grain finished, presumably because it would more closely resemble the US beef. Wrong. It resembles US beef only in price... it may be slightly more tender than standard grade Oz beef, but it completely lacks the flavor of normal grass fed Oz beef. Both standard grade Oz beef and our locally-produced Thai French beef are better. NY Steak is not an option until the "ban" is officially lifted and they can revert to US beef. My vote for "hidden gem" would be Mizu's on Patpong. Order the Sarika steak... tasty value in a unique ambience.

From memory this is the "hard to find" wood panelled place nearly opposite the 7-11/KFC in Patpong? Haven't been there for over a year but it was always good and remarkably reasonable in price!

Not really "hard to find", but takes a little squinting. Yes, the door is a dark non-descript wood... and there's a small sign (pale yellow, I think). Roughly opposite KFC... probably 200 meters from the corner of PP and Suriwong. Cheap, definitely... not eveyone's taste due to the unique ambience and occasional roach, but a classic greasy spoon. Same guy's been running it for 40+ years... one of the oldest businesses in PP. I think they clean the joint annually... except for the curtains, which have not been touched since they day they first hung them. They do a good saba fish too... the owner is Japanese.

I prefer this older more informative thread than the one started today -no silly discussion about Aussie cuisine. The information here is still current.

Yes, that is an alltime favourite, DF.... The decor is unique, with the same posters as 30 years ago. Plus, prices are very low.... Feel sorry for that big fish in the little tank though Favourite with Japanese.....

JW Marriott NY Steak is excellent as mentioned and pricey like NYC! Neils tavern is also excellent too. Outback and Sizzler same league and a good product. F'cKing Japs??? I never tried that place but it sounds chinese. Certainly wouldn't be a reference to a group of people as no one on this board ever denigrates anyone individually or collectively.

The best beef in the world is Oz beef, so all you other wannabes can pretend to enjoy your 'whatever' brand, but Oz beef will always be king, just ask Sidney. Is that restaurant in PP the little french one, I have heard they have a good steak, but had forgotten all about it until reading this again. I have never hear of 'sizzler' having a great steak ! But, the best beef I have ever eaten in all my life was a 12 month buffalo heifer in Oz, the tastiest, the juiciest, the tenderest, the flavouriest ? and it smelt damn fine as well. I will never forget the arse end of that sweet little heifer. It was also prepared in the most unconventional way as well, so all you people who claim it has to be prepared like this or like that, well, it does not. Just get your hands on an Ozzie arse end and you will be begging for moooore.
