Khao Chao @ Thong Lor Soi 17, Sukhumvit 55 Road
================================

Khao Chao has everything required of a decent Thong Lor eatery, whether it be cuisine that features only high-quality ingredients or decor that blends modernity with homeliness. Yet it doesn't have the pricey menu and ostentatious personality the posh strip is renowned for.

The small, air-con restaurant serves home-style Thai cuisine made according to a family's recipe. The menu presents 60 or so entrees priced between 40 and 70 baht (only dishes that feature a whole fish cost around 200 baht).

You shouldn't miss stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts (60 baht). Despite the dish's restrictedly farang-favourite persona, Khao Chao's version of kai phad med mamuang proves to be very delicious among diners with Thai taste buds.

From a selection of curries and clear soups, tom yum pla chon (60 baht) is my highly recommended choice. The soup dish features white and supple fillet of snakehead fish in sour and spicy clear broth nicely infused with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves and chillies.

For a quick dish, you might want to try khao yum, or southern-style herbal rice (40 baht) - an exciting combination of colourful variety of rice and finely sliced vegetables, fruits and herbs, namely kaffir lime leaves, pennyworth, carrots, string beans, lemongrass, green mango, pomelo pulp, bean sprouts and roasted, grated coconut with a sweet and savoury touch of budu sauce.

Another favourite quick dish is rice with beef stew (60 baht) featuring an ample portion of beef shanks lined with soft and clear tendon, potato, carrot and tomatoes.

Chaokuay nom sod (25 baht) presents tiny cubes of aromatic black grass jelly in fresh milk with crushed ice and old-fashioned brown sugar, and it is the dessert to have.

Na Aroon @ Ariyasomvilla, Sukhumvit Soi 1
===========================

Na Aroon is an absolutely is an exquisite Thai restaurant quietly tucked at the end of a soi. Adjacent to Saen Saeb canal, it occupies a space on the ground floor of a beautiful 70-year-old house once a residence of Charoen Sheanakul, the Father of Thai Engineering.

Culinary-wise, Na Aroon's menu presents an extensive variety of homestyle Thai and Western fare to cater for all types of diners. Yet, non-meat offerings (the owners are keen vegetarians) and old-fashioned Thai dishes (probably to complement the restaurant's graceful Siamese ambience) cooked with seafood are what Na Aroon focuses onthe focus. MSG is forbidden and all ingredients are carefully selected to provide as healthy a dining experience as possible.

First on the must-have list is hoy tord hed, or vegetarian-style mussel pancake (180 baht). Made with mushrooms, the dish is addictively delicious, especially when enjoyed with a typically sweet and sour hoy tord chilli sauce.

The restaurant's signature dish, which recently won a Thailand International Culinary Cup in the freestyle pasta category, is salmon and ebiko ravioli with green curry sauce (250 baht). Don't miss it. which you should not miss.

For entrees to be enjoyed with rice, I recommend you order lon poo nim, or soy bean dip with soft-shell crab (285 baht) and stir-fried mushroom with black pepper (195 baht).

Despite the restaurant's focus on ''healthy'' fare, however, when it comes to European dishes, the rich and creamy character of the Western cuisine is never compromised. Ravioli in pink sauce (225 baht) and penne carbonara (230 baht) are scrumptious evidences of this.

When it comes to desserts, Na Aroon's guests are offered a full stream of both Thai and Western sweets.

Order homemade warm fig pudding with vanilla ice cream (160 baht), apple crumble with vanilla sauce (160 baht) or homemade chocolate tart with fresh cream and ice cream (160 baht), and you'll be delighted.

Mae Yui Cafe @ Sukhothai Avenue Plaza,
Bond Street, Muang Thong Thani,
Off Chaeng Watthana Road
=========================

At Mae Yui Cafe, aka MY Cafe, food travels from its third floor's all-chrome kitchen via a state-of-the-art elevator, while diners can always observe what's going on in front of the stoves through closed-circuit television. And to make the experience even more interactive, a list of recommended dishes is presented on an iPad. But the restaurant's hi-tech gimmicks absolutely don't make its food any less worthy.

From a collection of appetisers, well worth-having is moo satay, or pork satay on skewers (120 baht). As tasty as that prepared by any top master on the street, and enjoyed traditionally with peanut curry sauce, cucumber salad and bread cubes, the pork, being well marinated and with just a perfect portion of permeated fat, is tender and flavourful.

Another item highly recommended is chicken vol-au-vent (150 baht), which is the restaurant's signature dish. Stuffed inside the fluffy and flaky puff pastry shell is an aromatic, creamy and delicious filling that features tender pieces of chicken meat.

The grilled vegetable salad (200 baht) is another delicacy worth ordering, as are the garlic butter french fries (150 baht).

You'll also enjoy nam phrik khai khem, or salted egg yolk-infused chilli dip (150 baht), served with a platter of fresh vegetables. But if you're a fan of rich and creamy pasta dishes, don't miss penne alla gorgonzola (250 baht) featuring the tube pasta with thick and salty Italian blue cheese sauce.

I highly recommend that you wrap up your meal here with baked camembert served with truffle-infused honey and toasted bread cubes (450 baht).
