I posted about Chok Chai's off of asoke before under another steak thread...but I think this is relevant here as well!!! the place is not as good as I remembered...went there twice on my recent trip and was kind let down....the spagetti bolognese is better than the burger my buddy had or the steak I had.... its a nice atmosphere and I wouldnt say it was a waste of money as both meals (2 people each time) were around 30 bucks each with a few drinks..... atl

"Good atmoshphere"? That is a curious description of Chokchai Steakhouse on the corner of Suk 23 and Sawadee... the interior is a cavernous, chilly, echo filled room, with no cozy tables, horribly uncomfotable wood chairs (which would flunk the place regardless of food quality), no table cloths, paper napkins, cheap stainless flatware and funky stemware. "Cheap imitation western” would be my description. The menu has Thai snacks, boring soups/salads, sandwiches, pasta, and steaks (which claim to be Charolais & Argentinian). At b400-700 the pricing is attractive, but with steaks you get what you pay for..... the wine list is inexpensive but also poor. The house caesar salad is all iceberg lettuce with a mayo-based dressing, edible but certainly not a caesar. The steaks come on a steel platter from the grill Mizu style.... the ribeye (Argentine) was tough and came with a baked potato in foil… always a sign of attentive food preparation. Steakhouse? Maybe... by stretching the definition. Worth a visit? There are too many better alternatives... Neil's Tavern Asoke is a short walk away and is a better option unless price is your only dining criteria...

The long announced Landmark Hotel Steak Restaurant ("...probably the best steaks in town." *their* words) is now open in one of their top floors... Am not a big fan of steaks though and haven't been there, so can't report. Might be a nice and cheaper variety from JWM.

Steaks were just not good!

Bad steak at the JW? Send it back and ask for the manager. After a few times dinners return their expensive 2-3K bhat steaks and refuse to pay - lets see what will they do. I agree the whole JW became a horrible place. Used to be nice and cheap when they open it (rooms). Landmark indeed is way better. Cheers!

I find that the NY Steakhouse is declining in quality. I used to be a great fan, however the food is just not as good as before. Just my experience. Yes, I could send things back, however I only send it back if it is truly bad (such as being overcooked or something obvious). If it doesn't taste as good as before I really do not feel justify in sending it back with the excuse of "it doesn't taste as good as before". Guess, just have to keep searching. Anyone tried the new Landmark place yet?

Bitpump The bad experience at New York Steakhouse you are referring to dates back to June 2006. By now it's almost February 2007. Get over it and give that place a miss - not a problem. There are many of us who still like the place. You can't do much wrong, putting a piece of meat on a grill. The question is if what kind of beef one orders. Is it chilled or frozen. Is it from Argentina, Australia, NZ or US. US Beef is by far the best (and most expensive).New York Steakhouse has US Beef permanently available as far as I know. Others don't. ...and no, I didn't try the renovated Rib Room at Landmark yet but certainly will because I am A Foody !

Done the Rib Room at Landmark this week Elegant and glamerous interior, good city views. Ambitious menu with French gourmet dishes and a range of steaks. The French rib-eye steak was a bit hard to cut, kind of a tough act. US Angus was ok, but it'd better be at Baht 1980.--. AND be warned - they charge Baht 120.-- for sauce in addition (!) Owing to this, the Rib Room appears more pricey than the New York Steakhouse, but it can't keep up with food quality or service levels. If anything the waitresses are too eager to refill the wine glass before we took the first sip. To be a bit sarcastic - I enjoyed the view over to the JW Marriott and it's big neon sign on the roof top, knowing, that my next steak will be eaten at the New York Steakhouse again. Better price / quality relation by far.

The NY Steakhouse charges for the souce too. I think more than 120Bhat (250Bhat?). You are in for a surpize, as the US Angus will cost you over 2500Baht. Souce not included! Most expensive steak at the NY Streakhouse is something close to 4000 baht. Forgot what that was! Cheers! Ap.-
