I think most people would agree that the best (upmarket) vietnamese restaurant is the Le Dalat Indochine in Suk 23 (not to be confused with Le Dalat also in Suk 23).
Great Vietnamese food in an old Thai house.

Anyway, the food was great, like I said, falang treated or not, it was still great and having had Roast duck curry all over town, this one was the best, so they get my 
The only problem on the night was the circus must have been in town, as the clown nearby was very disturbing

wanted to hit brew pavilion last night as didn't believe it could have been torn down, but indeed it is & it's really a sad sight, but plenty of free parking now I guess or a chance to hit the pumps up 'petrol station'!!!
BUT please someone confirm they're putting up an improved brew pavilion as I'd hate to trek all the way to tawan deang rama3 or pattanakarn for great beers & fun : (

I have been meaning to post on Chesa Swiss restaurant, soi 20.
I have eaten there a few times and it really is good contniental cuisine. The entrance is a small driveway off of Soi 20 and there is plenty of parking. Decoration is nice and understated.
I have tried several of the appetizers including seared tuna and rugola salad with buffala mozzarela and balsamic. All very good. Quite a selection of mains from venison to rabbit to more standard fish and meats. If you like venison, it is very good. Desserts are great and anthing with chocolate will be sure to please. A few Swiss wines on the menu are reasonably priced and quite acceptable.
The place isn't cheap but the quality and flavor of food is a very high standard.
If your Thai lady does not like western cuisine, don't take her here. They have little (other than a pasta) that will be 'aroi' for her. However, if she likes to try new and different tastes, this is a nice, romantic place to take her.

Didnt like the old Lord Jim's - food was expensive, average and the whole place had the feel of an Arab brothel.... not that I have been in one.... I'd like to try.... wrong thread....

I tried it last night.
New decor much improved. Menu unchanged - mostly fish, unimaginatively cooked.
Definitely expensive. Definitely not cool or trendy.

The next door table had a couple of lesbians.
One of them was all done up in a suit and tie. Her hair was slicked back. She was really sexy. She wasnt a dyke trying to be a man.... much more a sexy girl 'pretending' to be a man.
...unfortunately they left early....

Abrak, forget the Oriental when dealing with food...a place that has more look than quality.....great to impress people or short term visitors but the food&beverage is well behind of the reputation.
Very overpriced as you said.....most of the time I'm invited by the management and I'm actually glad that I'm not to pay for the food I got...even the thai food at the Sala Rim Naam is very poor.....
Btw talking about the hotels, a place I like is the Next2 of the Shangri-la...impressive buffet (claimed to be the biggest in town) with a strong quality....
Did you try the Vertigo of the Banyan Tree? Last time I went there I had a very positive experience in terms of view, service and taste....thumbs up!

Checked out Tsunami at the Marriott last week. I would only suggest to wait until they have worked out some of the opening 'kinks'. Staff are very nice and I think have been stolen from other hotels. Place is very chic but martini (sake) bar needs help.
