Quote: from Smegma on 6:22 pm on Sep. 22, 2004 At least for sure we established that the restaurant was not named after a car.
Tsk tsk tsk, everyone knows that the car came first. Just like the Austin Allegro gave its name (most inappropriately so) to the Italian language for joyfull/cheerfull/happy. some people!

Tried Mezzaluna last night. (Located one floor above Sirocco). Well actually I almost didnt try it. They wouldnt let me in at first cos I was too scruffy - they didnt like my jeans. I then asked if I could eat off the Mezzaluna menu in Sirocco and was told that it was against 'policy'. Most sensible people would have told the staff where to go at this point but I persevered mainly because it was nearly 10pm. Eventually they found me a pair of chef's pants (with elasticated waist) to put on - yes, they made me look a complete tosser. The restaurant is pretty spectacular - an amazing view combined with the opulence more normally associated with top Singapore or Hong Kong restaurants. However, the menu is a major disappointment. Mezzaluna is supposed to be an Italian restaurant but there is no antipasto, no separate pasta menu and no pizza. In fact the menu looks identical to the one at Siroccos - you know the sort of thing - Nuggets of Angus beef with Colonata lard, rosti potato, champignon mushroom and a Sangiovese wine sauce - beef, wine sauce and veggies. To be fair the food is a cut above that at Sirocco but then again that isnt really saying much. There is a four piece classical band playing the usual rubbish - they did become somewhat animated when they started on 'the saints come marching home'. Prices are as spectacular as the view - grilled phuket lobster Bt2900++ - as an example. At least Bt1000/head more expensive than Sirocco. (I would tell you how much I paid... but if you really need to know that, you shouldnt be eating there) Anyone who has read this thread will know that the sensible thing to do here is go to the Sky bar for a drink and eat elsewhere - this basically still applies. However, the good news for Mezzaluna is that although you are paying through the nose you are at least getting a decent meal - the food is definitely better than both Sirocco and Vertigo where you pay sky high prices for very very average food. (They do have a set lunch for Bt850++ which looks pretty reasonable) Maybe this review is overly negative (but what do you expect in a pair of elasticated trousers). I would certainly eat there again in preference to eating at Sirocco (or Vertigo for that matter). Oh and I did find an excuse to pull the elasticated chef's trousers down to my ankles in the middle of the dinner.

Abrak, I have had to blow off dinner at Mezzaluna twice and by the sound of it, I haven't missed anything. Was there much of any Italian cuisine on the menu? I bet you pulled those pants down in front of the hostess!!!

"did not see any gits in shorts or sandals. so my guess is on shoes and long pants. jeans and t's no pro. " A friend was turned down from the entrance downstairs because he was wearing sandals while I was waiting for him half laying on the terrace couch upstair, so no sandals, but many people dress casually. I stay in the area when in BKK and love to have a drink in Sirocco or V9. "Plannant" as we say over here

It's the policy, happened the same to me with a friend of mine..didn't help showing my name card and reminding that I booked already 2 groups of 30 people there......missus gave a killer look to the staff and then we left...it's a funny way to select the clients....if you are a cheap chinese tourist but you are wearing tennis shoes, then its' ok...but if you are a heavy western wallet with sandals....it's no-no...

Quite true.... I think they are very worried that the place is fast turning into a farang tourist trap, so they do anything to keep the % of Asians up. Funny really, you would think that a dress code applies to all, but apparently not. Then again, do you want to say no to nice people like the Chalerm brothers? The owner of the top floors is apparently good mates with these guys, and Chavalit etc - basically she is an arms dealer, so it isn't like you are dealing with a proper business person. That said, the guy who runs the place is a very serious business man, so maybe only some of his ideas get through?
