... a bit depressed... let down again... the latest best shot at a proper Reuben, all steaming hot and moist, turned into a dry f***.
... Dean and Deluca's Cafe, a well known NYC eatery, opened a branch a couple of weeks ago at the Mahanakhon Tower site (Chong Nongsi BTS Station)... the failure was complete... I will not even dignify them with a return trip for a second chance, assuming they are going through opening pains... they really went too far.
... their Reuben included a single thin slice of pastrami... I kid you not... one... and it could not have been sliced more thinly... you could read a newspaper through it.
... this felt like just another Thai scam... some Thai guy who has never been outside of Thailand, much less eaten an honest Reuben, saw a picture of a NYC deli and decides HE will open a NYC deli in BKK... he throws a pathetically thin slice of meat on rye bread, dashes it with cheese and a bit of saurkraut... he CALLS New York-style Reuben, declares his restaurant a NYC deli and expects customers to rave... typical brain deficient Thai hi-so (the owner is the son of Thai property developer with the 'right' name).
... it was insulting, and I cannot believe they actually served this sandwich.
... I expected NYC-style deli... what Dean and Deluca's opened is a high concept store long on design and furnishings, but decidedly needy on substance (perfect for Thais)... Dean and Deluca's is serving nothing that is unavailable elsewhere in BKK.
... Dean and Deluca's is only a franchise operation, so expect that it will eventually be bastardized by the owner without strict inspection by the franchisor.
... think Armani logo + black tee shirt = US$ 75.

... it is not a Reuben, but it is a GREAT pastrami sandwich!... not just a 'get-you-through-the-night-until-you-get-home' pastrami sandwich, but a great sandwich.
... found it, oddly, at an out of the way shopping mall called the Crystal Design Center (CDC), located out on Ramindra Motorway... the mall specializes in home furnishings... it is huge, and properly designed with nice public areas for sitting and eating, but it is a commercial flop... the place was empty... like, day after the plague, weird, empty.
... this jewel of a sandwich can be found there in the New York Cheesecake (02-102-2065... http://www.mynewyorkcheesecake.com ), which occupies a modest 4m x 8m modular building in the public areas between the mall buildings... few seats... limited menu... but, the pastrami is their killer app... the Thai owner lived in NYC, and gets it.
... an honest half pound of imported pastrami, just-cut onions, ripe tomatoes, lettuce, Thousand Island dressing... no garnishes... no chips.. no distractions from the main show... a magnificent sandwich... I can eat, and did finish this sandwich, but was just short of being uncomfortably stuffed... all for THB 279.
... can't believe the stroke of luck finding this place, but to add to it, the cheesecake here is also killer... New York style... my mom was raised in NYC, and it is as good as hers... a single slice will reasonably feed two farang... THB 179... what a glorious find this place is... too bad they were lured into such an out of the way, dead location... at off-peak hours, about a 25-30 minute taxi ride from mid-Sukhumvit, but worth the drive.

The menu on the website you reference both lacks a pastrami option at all, and lacks a cheesecake option at the price you specify.
Is the pastrami an off-menu option? Or is the menu just hopelessly out of date?
