Gianni's is great. IMHO they serve the best Italian food (but I am not really an expert).
However, the atmosphere sucks. For a start Gianni takes up about half the restaurant. And then there is a problem with most of the tables - too near the door, too near the toilet etc...
Finally, the crowd is usually business/bouffant khunying's... not much to look at...
And then there's his Golden Retriever that is allowed to wander the restaurant as the lunch hour winds down... It's still near the top of my Italian list, but a dog? Woof...

Well today I eventually made it to Giusto on Suk 23. Service was very efficient and professional. There was a hair in one of the Caesar salads and they changed it without any problem..... handled very well.
The lamb was excellent as was the pasta..... gnocci pasta which they told me was shaped like a rugby ball..... right on!
It is definitely a cool chic place but at the end of the day you pay for it all!.... cause it is expensive! But if you want to pay for the higher end of the market I can say that the food was very very good.

I agree with the appleman... giusto is very good and very pricey. I have been going since it opened and wasn't overwhelmed at first but they worked out some of their 'kinks' and it has improved steadily.

Think its the same with nearly all new restaurants.... it takes them a while to settle down and get things right - its a tough business! I reckon it takes at least 6 months to get things sorted out.
What is always interesting is to see what kind of changes they make... and compare the restaurant after a few months.
Sometimes its also true that the well established restaurants get "too comfortable" and stop making those all important changes....

It really isn't "great" Italian food but just a nice neighborhood place... LINO on Soi 31 near Euro Hotel.
Cuisine d' Travieso is the bill of fare and it isn't a pizza joint either. Nice pasta and some good Italian sausage. Chef Lino seems to be a nice guy and is trying his best to please. After the meal he will offer some home made pastry crust with powdered sugar that is a great ending to the meal.

Basilico (replaced Fino on Suk 33 across from the Novotel) has now been open a few days and holds promise. The help is very awkward, as would be expected at any new place, but the food is definitely better than Fino.
The place is being managed by the former Limoncello chef; the menu is similar with an emphasis on pizza and pasta... but with a good selection of main courses also (several seafood dishes, steaks, lamb). The tuna with capers was fresh and very good, caprese salad large with a good grade of cheese but the lamb chops were disappointing (the chops were untrimmed, probably because there has been a temporary outage of correctly trimmed lamb at Villa recently).
The wine list is exclusively Italian, so it has limited utility, but I was not charged corkage which is always a nice touch.
The glass covered atrium area in front is warm during the day... be sure to sit at a table that enjoys some draft from the aircon. A large pizza production area with oven dominates this area, so sit in the back dining area if you prefer a peaceful meal. The chairs were chosen based on cost and how closely they can be spaced... unfortunate because they are not comfortable, but typical of many otherwise good restaurants.
Pricing is comparable to other Italian venues. Open for lunch and dinner daily.

But it turns to offer a great view when the TGs working in Soi 33 are walking to their bars!

It's intentional....you order, you eat, you pay and you go cuz your ass is crying! great way to have a fast turnover of tables!

Beccofino has now been open about a week on Thonglor (near SubSoi 4) where Roses are Red used to be. Run by Angelo (formerly La Scala) with funding help from K. Triphong (Royal Kitchen Group), this place is a winner. Impeccable Italian without any of the glitz that is now in vogue, reasonable pricing and excellent service. (They recruit english language grads with the right look/attitude and train them... mostly female. More establishments should adopt this approach.. the results are impressive and the visuals very pleasant.)

I second basilico. been there twice and it was great. the chef/owner is very helpful.
