Yes, it is.

Oh, OK. Walk around a big shop (like Tescos, BigC or if you're feeling flush Emporium) and you'll find very good Thai coffee, imported coffee and coffee makers from Bodum (not drip, I know) and Braun to Philips and lots of others.

Starbucks have grinders for whole bean and French presses for a quick 1 minute brew to whatever strength you desire (add more grounds/less grounds).

Press was about 400B I think. Grinder 600B ??

With a press you don't need filter paper; a metal mesh is part of the press. Easy to clean. Lasts for years.

Watch out for the caffeine addiction though. Feeling very very weak and/or dizzy in the morning before your coffee ? Your addicted.

Central acquires licence to coffee chain - Italian chain to boost premium retail image
==============================================
Central Food Retail Co, the operator of Tops Market under Central Retail Corporation (CRC), has bought the operating licence for a leading Italian espresso coffee house chain. The deal is aimed at supporting the firm's position and market image as a premium food retailer.

The company recently bought the licence of Segafredo Zennetti coffee house from the Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group, said a Central Food executive.

The first Segafredo Zennetti outlet was opened at Central Food Hall on the fifth floor of CentralWorld, and was followed by two more outlets at Sukhumvit 41 and Thong Lor. It also plans to open standalone Segafredo Zennetti outlets outside Tops supermarkets in the future. A former top Starbucks executive will operate the new coffee house. Starbucks leads the premium coffee market.
The first Segafredo coffee shop is located on the fifth floor of CentralWorld in Bangkok.

Segafredo Zennetti is one of leading roasted coffee firms in Italy and now has about 350 affiliates worldwide.

Ian Pye, the Central Food president, said more details will be disclosed at a joint Thai and Italian press briefing to be held soon.

The company earlier expanded its winery section by opening its first Central Wine cellar in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province. It plans to open more new outlets in tourist destinations soon.

''The expansion into wine and coffee outlets will help emphasise our expertise as a food provider and allow us to offer diverse products at a reasonable price,'' Mr Pye said.

He added that the company would not look to necessarily expand Tops supermarket in all formats, but it would spend one billion baht on renovating existing stores and improving business quality over the next two years.

Of the total budget, 200 million baht will be spent opening another 4-5 Tops Daily mini supermarkets and six conventional Tops supermarkets.

Mr Pye said the company plans to spend about 100 million baht to rebrand Tops as a premium food provider.

After rebranding, Tops Market will be home to premium grade goods and exclusive brands for rich people. Tops Supermarket, its conventional format, would offer a complete range of quality products for value-minded shoppers.

Mr Pye said sales in the year's first five months grew by 7% in line with industry growth. The growth was lower than the same period last year because the company opened fewer new stores.

However, the company expects sales this year to reach 20 billion baht, up 10% from the same period last year, as renovations on 70 existing Tops supermarket outlets will be completed

Former tycoon's sandwich empire expands
===============================

Sirivat Sandwich and Payap University will open Sirivat Voravetvuthikun's third Coffee Corner at the school's Chiang Mai campus in August.

The shop is part of Sirivat's drive into the provinces. He said the shop would hire students and graduates as full- and part-time staff.

Already the shop is being fitted out and should start serving in August 2007.

"This will be considered a workshop for students studying business," said Sirivat, adding the shop would be a model for future Coffee Corners.

As well as coffee, the shops offer sandwiches, sushi using local rice and locally canned and bottled fruit juices.

Sirivat said apart from recruiting students he would use local materials, such as rice, as much as possible.

"Unless it cannot be found in the province the shop is located in we will use local goods," he said.

He expects to open more shops using the Payap format.

"I aim to list on the Market for Alternative Investment in 2009," said Sirivat, a survivor of the 1997 economic meltdown.

Starting from scratch after the crash, the former stock-market whiz and property developer began making and selling sandwiches at busy commercial areas in Bangkok like Silom and Sukhumvit.

Presently he is running Coffee Corner as a private concern but will seek partners and venture capital as he expands the company.

Before listing he hopes to franchise Coffee Corner to accelerate expansion.

To help meet quality standards he plans to establish a Sirivat Institute to provide training for franchisees and staff.

He opened his first Coffee Corner by Sirivat Sandwich at BNH Hospital five years ago.

The second opened at Bangkok Hospital last year.

He introduced a variety of healthy fast-food products, too, using local rice and fruit.

Recently, Sirivat began marketing Ma-Kiang and Samrong fruit juices in bottles and cans using the Sirivat Sandwich brand.

Make a note of the coffee at "Coffee Plus" which is located in most Caltex petrol stations. Whatever coffee they are using is some very smooth blend and latte in the morning does wonders. BT 50 for a decent size- about the same as small latte at Starbucks. They grind the beans fresh as they make it, so the expresso is the real deal.

I'd picked up one of those coffee presses (with the metal screen) two years ago from the Starbucks on the corner of Soi Nana 3, then bought beans from Coffee World. A great eye opener in the morning, and more economical than purchasing by the cup.
