Hey all!

Sometimes at the Emporium, top floor, a hotel sets up shop and dishes out some great food. Well, once The Penisula had some delicious stir fried beef and the best barbequed Chinese style ribs that I could sink my teeth into and eat all the meat to the bone!

But that was a lucky shot, because other hotels come to The Emporium and the food is good, but not as good as that rib day!

Okay, my question is, besides telling me "Well, go to The Peninsula and get a take out":

Where can I get a set of nice big Chinese barbequed style ribs with big bones and meat that I can sink my teeth into and rip apart?? I'm having the same trouble in Hong Kong, looking for big ribs!

Also looking for real good Chinese take-out in Bangkok! You suggestions, menues, links to pictures (so I can see), directions and more would ROCK!! PM me if you can, it's okay!

Will be in Bangkok end of May and besides eating pussy and drinking beer and ice orange juice, I need some ribs!

THANKS! Gyaos!

Sounds like the ribs you want are more Texas or Australia than China. Spareribs done Chinese style are meant to be small, almost bite-sized, so they can be handled easily with chopsticks.
If you're out after big, meaty Western-style ribs, there are several U.S. or Australian-themed restaurants in BKK where you can get them.
If it is Chinese flavor but Western size than you want, that could be more difficult. One solution that worked for a colleague of mine when we were working in Beijing was to explain to a local restaurant that he wanted big ribs cooked Chinese style. I doubt even then that he'd been able to pull it off if the inital order hadn't been a big one (for 30 people at a birthday party) and if he hadn't had the services of a local assistant who could explain in Chinese exactly what was wanted. After that, though, it wasn't any problem to get jumbo-sized Chinese ribs at that restaurant, although they did need a few hours advance notice.

Great American Rib
Sukhumvit Soi 36
On right side coming down from Suk.
Can get there from Rama IV... big green sign shows where Soi 36 is.
Not sure the ribs are as big as you want as I have not eaten there yet but will soon.
Run by an American fellow I believe.

Gyaos -- Seems pretty clear to me that you want Chinese ribs not American, Texas, Australian or Tony Roman (sic). And you're talking about the big ones like these: http://www.meattopleaseyou.com/media/chinesestylekingribs.jpg
and not the small ribs that are often prepared with black bean sauce, correct? Check Shangrila on Silom Rd near Patpong; it's been awhile since I've been there so you should call ahead to see if they have them (02/234-9147 or 02/234-9149).

Bourbon Street's and Tony Roma's ribs are not strictly barbequed - they are first boiled ("parboiled"), after which they are then grilled, then slathered with way too much barbeque sauce, containing way too much sugar for my liking.

Ribs at Mojo's and Great American Rib Company (whose barbeque pits are set up by the same guy) are smoked only - and then, slathered with way too much barbeque sauce, containing way too much sugar for my taste.

Try the latter 2 restaurants if you want a purely smoked rib - hickory and apple wood. They are served in full-rib portions. Late afternoon or evening is best, before anything starts drying out - never late evening.

For barbeque newbies, suggest sauce on the side if you really want to judge if these guys know what they are doing - overpoweringly sweet barbeque sauce and parboiling are what most commercial joints use to conceal failures at the pit.

For Chinese Bar-B-Q'd ribs try Bua.

Used to be in Central Chidlom (don't know about now). Another branch beside Seri Center (Bang-Na area).

definetely try Great American Rib. just ask for dry-rub (no sauce) excellent. very good flavor...

also they are introducing a mexican menu soon as I understand.

as for the chinese ribs. I understand the love of those meaty ribs too... in nyc they are everywhere in chinatown.

havent seen them here but am sure that the restaraunts here have it in them... just keep looking around. probably the hotels and other full service kitchens (not like the street stalls and small shops)
