I like the recently opened one on Sukhumvitt, Soi 20 named "Koi" it is up a little ways into the Soi on the right hand side. They also have a bar there of which usually full of models. Rumor is that they are offered free food and drink to provide eye candy for customers.

In terms of value for money, Genki Sushi has pretty decent sushi. There's one in CP Tower on Silom. Sadly, I've never seen any models in there...

I saw a restaurant on local TV that had the sushi in little boats that float along a stream in front of you - kind of like the Genki Sushi or Shabushi conveyor. Does anyone know which restaurant that is or where it is? Is it pricey?

Fuji (in most malls) is very good and consistent.

Koi is excellent and will surely have plenty of eye candy on display.

I like the Oishi places. There are about 4 of them around BKK; I've been a few times to the one in Thonglor, Suk Soi 55. They do an all you can eat deal where the price varies, depending on what time you turn up. The TGs tend to love them as there's such a massive choice - teppanyaki, dim sum, fresh grilled fish, salads, lots of other things as well as sushi and sashimi. QA friend of mine resident in BKK was telling me the branch in the Siam Discovery Centre is more expensive, but well worth it as the raw ingredients and the concoctions are greatly superior.

But next time I'm over, I'm definitely going to try Koi. Sushi and Thai eye candy? Together under one roof? Oh yes. Oh yes.

I like Fuji. They've got a really nice menu- good selection, great diversity- and offer a good value for the Baht, in my opinion.

But what they offer is a Thai-fied Japanese cuisine. Just as Thai cuisine is neutered abroad so too is the Japanese here. You see virtually no Japanese eating in Fuji, ever, for this reason. If you're a fan of quality sashimi, for instance, like I am, Fuji will frustrate the hell out of you- every single time.

Sorta hard to know who knows the authentic cuisine versus who is steering you to the local next-best-thing cuisine.

That said, if there's any Enoki mushroom fans out there- Fuji's got a treat for you.

As far as the OP's request: I'm still evaluating the new Japanese place in the new food court that opened recently in Emporium. So far it's been nothing but great. The owner/head chef- a Japanese man well into his 60's- can be seen there daily, doting over the staff, making sure they're getting it right. Sashimi and sushi so far has been impressive, so far...

Cheers guys,

Are there any good resturants that are not a chain and offers some very autentic Japanse food (like the kind of place where you will see the Japanse eating)

I went into a place on Silom Soi 6 (about 30 yards down the soi on the left) that seemed pretty authentic. Quite a few Japanese in there at lunch time when I was there.

Prices are pretty steep though.

Also another spot where I've seen the Japanese eating - is it me, or does that make them sound like an exotic species on a nature programme? I can just hear that odd Aussie croc bloke excitedly saying "Crikey, have a look at this! It's a bloody great herd of Japanese feeding. Now we've got to be careful here, 'cos in spite of their size, this amazing species can attract flocks of dangerous bargirls by the hundred from all around the watering hole. We're not sure how they do it, but...Yes, look! Here comes the first flock now!" - sorry, wandered a bit off topic.

Another spot is the restaurant underneath the office building right next to Rajadamri BTS station - not sure the name of the building or the restaurant, and again it is a bit pricey. I think the building has a Japanese business library or something like that in it.

There seems to be quite a correlation between "authenticity" and price, which might be why most people (myself included) prefer Fuji or Zen and such.

Anyway, there's also quite a bit of info on some of the other threads in this forum on the Japanese restaurants in the bigger hotels too...

fuji is a chain, and as such it is absolutely disgusting. there are a number of smaller japanese restaurants up and down sukhumvit, including near soi 33/1...pretty good, and not too expensive...very authentic.

for sushi though, I spare no expense. I like the japanese restaurants at westin and marriott. very expensive, but very good sushi. not a bit chewy or glazed over like the shit at fujis.
