Blue Elephant woos affluent at-home diners
================================

The London-based Blue Elephant Thai restaurant chain has introduced ready-made frozen Thai and Indian meals to appeal to high-end Thai customers. Karl Steppe, president of Blue Elephant International, said that the company's 80-million-baht factory in the Navanakorn Industrial Estate had added a new production line to make up to 50,000 boxes of meals per day.

The first four meals to be offered next month are Beef Penang Curry, Tamarind Duck, and two Thai-Indian dishes. The products are aimed at the middle to upper market with retail prices set at 149 baht per box, double the cost of chilled or frozen meals offered by most other brands.

He said that the company was negotiating with Japan's leading supermarket chain, Jusco, to sell meals at its outlets.
Nooror Somany Steppe, Blue Elephant's cuisine expert, shows off some of the new menu items.

The Thai factory is also a main producer of key items such as pastes, sauces, dried fruit, coconut milk and salad dressings to supply leading supermarkets in 13 countries including Harrods and Waitrose in the UK.

He said that the new ready-to-eat meals would help sales of Blue Elephant to rise by around 7% to 1.3 billion baht, of which 20% would come from grocery products and 80% from 12 restaurant outlets across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. A new outlet is planned in Jakarta, Indonesia this year.

The company also runs the Blue Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant under the supervision of Nooror Somany Steppe, who is famed for her authentic Thai cuisine and is a key person behind the success of the restaurant chain.

CP unit to boost output of ready-to-eat meals, bakery goods
==============================================

CP Retailing and Marketing Co Ltd, the producer and distributor of ready-to-eat meals and bakery goods under CP All Plc, plans to spend about 1.6 billion baht between 2008 and 2012 to open eight small plants in each region.

Wisade Wisidwinyoo, the company's senior vice-president, said the investment would support expansion in the future and help the company reduce its logistics costs by 10-20%.

Additionally, it would help keep its products fresh and reduce product damage because it will take only four hours to deliver its baked goods and ready-to-eat foods to each outlet.

The company now produces meals and bakery products from its factory in Lat Krabang Industrial Estate and four smaller factories in Phitsanulok, Songkhla, Khon Kaen and Chiang Mai.

Mr Wisade said the locations considered for the new plants included Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Surat Thani and Ratchaburi.

With the additional production, CP plans to expand its food and bakery business by about 20-25% per year. To meet its goal, the company will shift its focus to the export market by increasing the proportion of exports to 50% in the next five years, from 30% now.

The company now has about 1.1 billion baht in sales from exports, the majority of which are shipped to the United Kingdom. CP plans to expand its customer base by expanding its ready-to-eat meals in Asia, Europe, the United States and Australia.

''There is huge potential for ready-to-eat meals from Thailand and the demand will continue in the future. Though the baht is getting stronger, the company will focus on expanding its business in overseas markets,'' he said.

In Thailand, CP plans to expand its ready-to-eat meals for hotels, schools and tour buses. As well, it will launch at least one new product in a week.

CP expects its sales in 2012 to rise to 10 billion baht, up from the estimated four billion baht this year. Of the total, about 60% would come from meals and the remainder from the bakery business.

CP All shares closed yesterday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 9.05 baht, down 1.09%, in trade worth 77 million baht.
