... opened sometime late 4Q2009, or early 1Q2010, La Monita is a taqueria-style restaurant, fashioned after something you might find on the US west coast... Spartan and uncluttered... contemporary finishes and furnishings, with brightly colored walls... and small, maybe 5 picnic tables with bench seating and a few bar stools overlooking a pretty sterile side soi scene... it has wifi.
... the competition in Bangkok's still developing Mexican food sector seems to be inspiring some higher quality Mexican restaurants... in the 4-5 times I've eaten here, I would call La Monita one of them.
... the food is quite good, and served in large portions... the service responsive... clean and comfortable... a short 1-1/2 minute walk from the Ploenchit BTS Station... a great joint for a quick bite, but not the place you would linger away the afternoon pounding beers and watching the tortillas swell-up in your belly.
... as a proper taqueria, the menu is peasant food... basic madre Rosita stuff... burritos, quesadillas, tacos... BUT... they include an equal number of worthwhile selections that are non-standard fare here... nacho fries (recommended), Mexican breakfasts (breakfast burritos, chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, served all day), tortas (sandwiches), Cuban rice bowl dishes (with a variety of toppings).
... the ingredients are fresh and properly cooked... generous choice of several tasty salsas... the pork in the carnitas dishes I enjoyed are moist and not overcooked, even in the late afternoon when kitchens get lazy and their precooked BBQ tends to dry out... the breakfast burrito was killer, as was the burrito supreme... truly filling.
... La Monita is not cheap street food... but... Bangkok is not an Old Mexico barrio, now is it?
... with La Monita, Los Cabos, Senior Pico's, I am now feeling a bit better about being this far from good Mexican food... if you struggle with a Mexican food jones, put La Monita on your hit list.
