OK, I'll start: I like Issan food. I know two fairly elaborate sit-down places on Suk Soi 36. Anybody know any good, less formal, little joints near Sukhumvit? Push-carts don't count. haam sup

HS: Now we are talking! I don't know how down and dirty you want to get, but I took my steady to Steak-Lao, it is a franchise (4 restaurants). The one we went to was across from Tony's Entertainment Complex (New Petchburi), it isnt the fanciest of places but was cute enough (equivalent of a TGIFridays or a Applebees in the US). The food was pretty good and my steady was able to order all her favorite Issan dishes and educate me on them. Order the sizzling beef something, the sauce is great and the sizzling part is always impressive. I think there is a good Issan restaurant in the Patpong area but I dont know where or what it is called. Steak-Lao gets my vote! http://steaklao.thailand.com/

Issan food is great and nothing makes a bargirl happier than a farang who wants to eat Issan food instead of farang food. There is an odd place on Suk 2 in Ploenchit Center (2nd floor) that is nothing like you would expect in a shopping center... very good Issan dishes as well as Northern Thai dishes. Easiest way is to just tell whatever bargirl you take you want Issna food.. she will do the rest. Give her a few hundred baht and food for an army will appear later.

Great! BTW, I forgot to name my two faves: Vientiane Kitchen, Suk Soi 36, 200m S. of Suk.: Great food, in a roofed Ban Lao, i.e., open to the air (and mosquitos ), Live Issan music and dancers. and Ban Lao, on the same sub-soi, turn right at Vientiane Kitchen, 500M west, on the left.: My TG friends say the food here is a little bit better, but no live misic, or dancers. Open air, bad if it rains, but delicious. Both the above places are good for larger parties, since the menus are extensive, and half the fun is trying new stuff. Definitely will try SteakLao next time, and the place in Ploenchit Ctr. Thanks haam sup

Been to Vientiane Kitchen a couple of times. Took a couple of the brothers and a girl from Long Gun there once. Had a good meal and a pleasant time. Always end up seated at the same table somehow. haam sup, I am surprised that they even have steak at a Laos restaurant. Most Isaarn girls I've met eschew beef as it reminds them of the family buffalo.

seubeu, SteakLao refers to a restaurant named by Tyler at the beginning of the thread, not a dish at Vientiane Kitchen. I have eaten with Lao friends here in the US, and they made larb nuea (beef) by the bucket full (literally). Anyway, glad you liked Vientiane Kitchen, too. I think it would be a good place for a bunch of us to meet up sometime. I want to be 'in the saddle' or eating a good meal when I die. haam sup

Sorry to mix up your posts, I was referring to the "sizzling beef something" in TD's post. Now I'll have to try the other Laos place sometime. I know just who to take to order for me!

haam sup, Enjoyed Vientiane Kitchen for the first time on my last trip. Went with my TGF and a friend. It was great, and my TGF felt right at home. My friend doesn't deal as well with spices, so she and I had a lot of fun torturing him with some of the hotter stuff (I guess I'm getting used to it because we often eat with her aunt and uncle at their place). The live entertainment was good too. - Balls

Balls, I've taken a bunch of folks there, and always had a good time. Does anyone know any other little Issan places to just drop in for a bite? I know one small place between Ratchadamri and Lang Suan, but I couldn't even begin to describe how to get there. It's in a walkway at the end of a soi, and is super cheap and delicious. I'd like to find a few like that closer to Sukhumvit. Man, I'm jonesin'... haam sup aka ham soup

Does anybody know of a good place to get some Chinese Dim Sum? I checked out Chinatown and was very very disappointed.
