It has been established that the new fairs are identical to the old fairs. Forget the piss poor "uphill and downhill" arguement. The price of petrol on Phuket is not %300-%500 more expensive than anywhere else in Thailand regardless of the hills but the tuk tuk fairs are absolutely the biggest tourist rip off in the entire country !!! As usual the local government has no backbone. All anyone has to do is organize a mob and stomp and cry loudly until the person in charge can no longerstandtheir temper tantrums and they will then place any new law on the back burner for review. This can last for an eternity just like banning the jet skis 4-5 years ago. See how far that went ??? By the way, there's a new sheriff in town and I'm not talking about the police. All of the tuk tuk that park in the middle of Soi Bangla after midnight are "off island" boyz. The local tuk tuk drivers are downright ready to fight till the end to eliminate the "foreign" (no, not the farang)influence in this town. The locals don't like to be told to get off of their own turf !!!

if anyone does not like their prices/custom of practice then just do not use them.
i have used them 3 times in the past and no problems,but i can understand if people do.
i'm normally so close to my hotel i walk.

I could'nt possibly expect you to understand after a whole 3 visits to Phuket the implications that the tuk tuks have had on tourism on this island. Yes indeed walking is always an option. If everybody just simply walked we would'nt need these tyrants would we ??? There is definately truth in your statement but it's not remotely practical !!! Perhaps everyone should just rent cars and motorbikes ??? OOPS, no where to park because of the Tuk Tuks and illegal motorbike and car rental services. Bottom line is the time is wayyyyy overdue to implement some sort of regulations and ENFORCE them wheather the Tuk Tuk drivers like them or not, especially before they completely ruin the place for all the rest of us !!!

Samlors (tuk tuks) SUCK whether in Phuket or Bkk.
Boycott them. Publicize it and warn tourists not to use them.

Wish we could but there is NO other form of transport available in Patong and not much available on the rest of Phuket apart from the trusty Motersi which are not everyones cup of tea

you hit the nail on the head.
as a tourist on 5 occassions,i decide not to use them.
the only times i have used them,have been the times when i've been with 2 or more people and then the price was always negotiated by the thais.
my choice is either to walk or get a motorbike.
as a tourist i would'nt presume to know a lot about thailand,but i do know how many locals feel about the tuk-tuks and boycott them.
but if they are the only type of transport available,then needs must.
i don't use them because most of the distances i travel are so small it is pointless.
i find i've had more hassles with the motorbikes.

What are the rates....As to motobbikes..Very dangerous
I don't ride MotorBike Taxi either.
I have ridden many Tuk tuk in Patong with out problem...
Bankgok is another story....I have been in the Tuk Tuk from hell ride etc...
I spend alot of time in Patong and considering the total cost of a car and problems when a motobike decides to hit you Tuk Tukl are not such a bad idea....
Now What are the new rates????

Ok, let me try this again !!! The rates are the SAME !!! There has been NO CHANGE !!! It has always been the attitude of the Tuk Tuk Bandits to get as much out of you as humanly possible short of putting a gun to your head. All the talk about posted fares is just a lot of hot air. Take it from someone who has been living here permanently for the last 10-11 years !!! Yes, there was a few meetings but the outcome is ALWAYS THE SAME. Nothing has changed !!!
