Just returned from a week in Phuket and after reading Nokna's recommendations booked into the Sansabai Bungalows. Have to say I was generally disappointed.

The good things going for the place are the friendliness of the staff. Noo was very friendly as were the other girls working there and the cafe food was tasty and cheap. Also the ease with which you can bring a girl in is good too.

On the downside though was the standard of the accomodation. I was not expecting the Ritz or Mandarin Oriental however I did expect a basic standard of cleanliness. The place is left seriously wanting in that department. The bungalow is well swept but very dingy, musty, smelly and generally scummy. The airconditioner is a massive 1970's job and is not effective at all. The bathroom is also full of scum round the shower area. Most off putting is the notice requesting you to put toilet paper in the bin (which has no lid). I'm sorry I put toilet paper in the toilet. I'm not having an open bin reeking of sh*t with insects buzzing around! The proliferation of mosquitos is also a problem. Initially I thought it was me and them sensing my foreign blood. But a girl I brought back was also scratching mozzy bites all night. The worst part for me was the sheets they gave me on the second day which had blood on them! All this for 1000 baht a night too. The main problem is that the bungalows are generally old and the interiors need some srious renovation.
On my 3rd day I got chatting to a Japanese guy on the beach who also coincidentally works in the same city as me. He recommended me the guesthouse where he stayed. 2 mins walk to the beach and also 3 mins to Bangla Rd. He showed me the place. Well furnished, clean, modern with a decent bathroom and powerful shower. Only 800 baht. Well I moved out of Sansabai Bungalows the next day on the pretext of visiting a nearby island and moved straight into the guesthouse.

I guess you've been going to Patong for a while Nokna and have a special affinity towards the sansabai Bungalows. However I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Shop around there is much better accomodation in a similar price range elsewhere. That's my advice.

these subjects are always difficult to answer to.
we all like different Girls, drinks, food hotels and we all have different views on things.
i see Members saying they hate Nana Hotel, but others rave about it.

i'm sorry that boggler had a bad experience, but it happens to us all.
but he stayed there for a couple of days and he has said what he thought about the place.
he found somewhere better and kudos to him for posting a report.
but I would like my say.

the staff are very good, the food is good and cheap but I didn't really eat there that much.
i like the location and the ease of getting to the action areas.
i know Rezyek was quoted 500 for a night 3 weeks ago, but as he ended up staying elsewhere he cannot give an opinion which is a shame.
another Member is staying at the Bungalows later this month and I hope he has a far happier time.

the first time I stayed I had a small bungalow and it was adequate but all I need is a bed and a shower.
anything else is incidental, I don't care how many TV channels there are, what the decor is like and what kind of beer is in the fridge.

i may have been lucky on my 4 stays there and made a good impression because I kept going back and maybe that may have been why I had good service.
i found the maids were very good at their job and if they knew I had returned during the day for a S/T they would often change the sheets again..a nice touch.
the maids who sorted out my room each day were very dilligent.
i was given 6 towels a day (which is handy) and I would often come back to the room and find they had folded my clothes and put them away or hung them up in the wardrobe after I had left them strewn the room.....the little darlings.

i always found the bathroom was spotless after they had left and everything like the soaps and things had been replaced after I had used them.

on further visits I was given the best bungalow with kitchen and living room and never paid more than 700 for a night.
a friend of mine stayed earlier this year in the same bungalow and he raved about the place, enjoyed it so much.

the question of mozzies is a difficult thing to comment on as well.
no matter in the world I go, I rarely have a problem with them but yes the bungalows attract them.
it is built next door to a big lake which is kept natural and with many fish and the bungalows are situated in an area which has much flora.
many trees, bushes and local types of flowers.
very natural and nice looking, but an environment like this will always attract the bad things.

my bungalow was right by the small pond they have and there were always frogs around and I hate the little f*ckers.
the pond was always buzzing with the mozzies, but this is a good thing because everything is kept natural.
this is not a high rise concrete building in the middle of a town.
the hotel provided mozzie repellent coils and I found the Girls would activate them no worries after that.

i was happy to share my room with the Gecko's, after all I could not keep them out and at least they kept their distance.
but my one fear were the cockroches which appeared now and then, but again how can any human stop them appearing?

i hate any small creatures and while frogs and spiders are a horror to me, the roaches freak me out.
i remember Nok and I trying to kill one once and I was hiding behind her letting her do the work.
but the next time one scuttled across the floor was when I was on my own and I had to get a beer from the fridge and have a few swigs before I had the courage to chase it and kill the f*cker.

i understand boggler's point about toilet paper being put in the bin.
this is a custom in many countries and I also do not observe the custom that much.
i also flushed the paper down the toilet, but it is no good moaning about the situation when it is natural to the locals.
but saying that I found most of the Girls did the same as me.

A/C in the bungalows?
i always had A/C and a fan and as the room gets very hot after many hours away and I always switched it on when I returned.
i had very good A/C but I found it was too good and really chilled the room.
i would leave it on for 20-30 mins to cool the room and then just have the fan on.
but then I would have to fight with the Girls.

at night they wanted full A/C, fan and to sleep under the covers.
why make the room so cold so that you have to get under the covers?
i used to wake up during the night and switch the A/C off and sleep on top of the bed and laugh at the Girls moaning in the morning they were too hot.

well enough of my waffling.
i have tried to explain why I like the place and hope people will give it a try.
i'm sorry boggler had a bad time and hope it does'nt put others off.

but as I said earlier, we all have different views on things.
and anyone can do what boggler did and move hotels if they are dissatisfied.
we all have the choice.

Thanks for the report on this place. I am booked in to it for a week at the end of Nov, but after reading your words, im not going to bother, its to much of a risk, so I am now looking again.

Gecko's, roaches, spiders, mozzies, frogs and sh*t in the corner?
WHF! please dont suggest another hotel to me, thanks.
No wonder it was only going to cost £100 for the week.

well I tried to help you out in the past ukguy.
you asked me about the place and after my words you decided to book, but I admit at a higher price than I have ever paid.
but you were going to stay in high season which I have never done.
shame you have no mind of your own.
you have 2 opinions of a hotel and without having tried the place for one night you want to believe the negative report?
you have a choice to stay there and check it out and move to another one if you do not like it.
but no, you have decided the place is unacceptable because someone who stayed there for the first time criticised the place.
and someone with his first post on the Forum said a few bad words and maybe someone who wants to diss the place.

"Gecko's, roaches, spiders, mozzies, frogs and sh*t in the corner?"

sh*t in the corner?, not my words and not my experience, I found it very clean.

i stayed in a room on the 8th floor of a 4*hotel in BKK and the geckos were on the walls.
read my post and understand the the bungalows I love were are situated in an area of natural fauna.
i'm not saying you will not see spiders and roaches in an upmarket hotel, but can anyone say they will not be there?

f*ck me, the frogs were encouraged to breed because of the hotels idea of keeping things natural, is this a bad thing?
should the hotel kill all the animals and pour weed killer to kill all the natural fauna because the guests do not like the colours or smell?

as for the mozzies, what the f*ck can you do with them?
can anyone tell me of a hotel which guarantees they will not be a problem?
if you are worried about a few insects then I suggest you stay in the UK.

i may be defending the hotel I stay at, I but I think boggler has given bad press and influenced others to thinking it is a bad place to stay.

find somewhere else to stay and say nothing about the bungalows and I hope you get a cheaper price.
because of your narrow minded view I have decided that any questions asked of me about Phuket will go unaswered.

what is the point of people like you asking me a question and then totally ignoring it?

This is what this forun is about, reports on Phuket, letting members know about hotels ect.

If you check into a hotel and you have not stayed before, get them to show you the room before you check in.

What I look for is a clean room, a/c and a good work bench, bed.

You realy dont need a swimming pool ect when you can walk to the beach from most of the hotels in Patong.

I stay at the C+N Hotel and it is great, rooms cleaned every day, rooms are in good condition good a/c and a five min walk if that to the bars on Bangla.
They even give you a free pick up from the airport and even better if you start to become a regular you get a better rate.

One day when I was checking in Chris/new year a German guy walked up and asked how much for a room
they told him 1600 bht, he paid.
Me I was paying 1000 bht.

Had I have had the info about the hotel before I booked it I wouldn’t have.
And just because someone has a different view than you shouldn’t make you angry as it looks like it has.
Your view is positive, bogglers is negative, as a first time visitor I don’t want to risk booking into a place that has a 50/50 chance of being a sh*t hole, I don’t do sh*t holes!
I know you take a chance staying at any hotel, and that paying a lot of money wont be a guarantee of it being to your taste, but if you haven’t paid as much as £100 per week to stay here its probably a good indication that there wont have been a lot of investment going into the place.
I don’t want to fall out with you over this, and hope you don’t, that’s up to you
RESPECTIVELY

I made the mistake of billeting some UK friends on a tight budget at Sansabai last winter. I had occasionally used the place in the past for short time appointments.

Our friends checked out after two nights quite disgusted. They said that it was the worst place that they had stayed at in Thailand. To my way of thinking, the property could benefit from being redeveloped as a higher density resort hotel.

Anyway. No harm done. Everyone's taste is different.
