Hello? I am going to phuket next week and I am thinking of hiring a bike due to the expensive taxi fares and to roam around phuket city. As far as I know, thers is no breathlyzer test in BKK and Pattaya or at least I have not seen so far. In phuket, do the police do the breathlyzer test?

cocoroso No, correct, there are not many rules at all, BUT! British Embassy Travel Advice Still Current at: 2 September 2004 Updated: 31 August 2004 FWIW http://www.britishembassy.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1065714377280 Road Safety Riding a motorcycle or scooter in Thailand can be dangerous. An average of five people an hour die in motorcycle accidents in Thailand. You should take the same safety precautions as in the United Kingdom. The Thai law that safety helmets must be worn is widely ignored: a contributing factor in many tourist deaths each year. The motorcycles or scooters available for hire in beach resorts are usually mopeds of less that 50cc. They are not registered as a vehicle and cannot, consequently, be used legally on a public road. Motorcycles or scooters of under 50cc and also some larger motorcycles are not insured and if there is an accident, the hirer is responsible for any damage or loss of the vehicle or injury to a third party. Before you hire these vehicles check the small print of the lease agreement carefully. You should not hand over your passport as a guarantee against returning a motor scooter or cycle. They can be held to ransom by unscrupulous owners against claimed damage to the motor scooter or cycle.

Fellow, the only thing you should worry about is your own safety Getting drunk and using a bike in Phuket. Make sure you can get from Banana to Safari without falling down onto the concrete and stop worring about getting a fine. You health is worth much more than 100 bath tip. Cheers,

It seems you're more concerned about your own consequences then those of your potential victims.

If you take travel insurance, check to see what they cover if you have a motorcycle accident, a lot of them won't cover you. Beefa

Yes, watch them trees and correct that most if not all insurance companies will not cover you if a) you were drunk b) you did not have a thai licence and c) you did not have a full motorcyle licence in your home country. Even then if all the above is correct, they may only cover you for half the expenses if your legal, they have special clauses re motorbike accidents, must be a lot of them. Also, re driving drunk, would you do it your country, would you be happy to see your family or friends the recipient of a drunk drivers good deed. Grow up some of you idiots, just cos you go to a different country, dont do things you would not sensibly do at home. Its the old saying about tourists behaving badly. Locals do it for sure, but that is their problem, not yours. But reminds me of drink driving in Vanuatu and being stopped by the cops, they sent me back to the pub cos I wasn't drunk enough to drive home.

MN, No need to be rude. As far as I know, the chance of killing or injurying somebody (besides yourself) ridding a motorcycle in Thailand are close to nothing. This being said, to answer the question, cops in thailand do have the breathlyzer test. I was myself tested negative in Kho Chang in the middle of the afternoon. Cheers,

Bizarre statement..... In addition. Police occassionally have breathalizers, I know a Thai friend in Phuket who got stiffed for 10,000B recently for DUI. Police road blocks are a feature of current Phuket life, regularly on the road Patong to Phuket Town near the Police Station, and also at the drop into Karon from Patong. Impromptu ones spring up wherever they feel like. If you are foreign and have been drinking...expect some sort of punishment...it's how the police in Phuket keep up with the rising costs on the island. Dangerous place to ride any time and the foreigners are as bad as the Thai's in my experience.

Yurune, Nothing bizarre, I just said that it would be difficult to kill somebody with your Motorcycle. When I was arrested in Koh chang the going rate (for the fellow right after me that was really really drunk) was 500 Bath. 10,000 seems a bit high. Cheers
