A colleague of mine has recommended that I get myself over to Phuket in early December for the Kings Cup Yachting Week. Never having been to Phuket I was thinking of taking him up on this offer. He has even offered to see if he can get me on to the boat that he will be racing in.
I am a definite land-lubber so this may prove interesting. Has anyone been to these things before and what are they like? Can we expect a load of drop-dead model types advertising hessian & hemp etc, a la Formula One GP's or am I getting prematurely excited?
Is this a busy week and do I need to book early?

Yes, usually not hard to get on to crew a boat if you know anything about sailing! They trawl the Bars before the races start (one of the features of the event I guess) for additional bodies. If you get on a serious boat (unlikely) you will work bloody hard! But good fun.

OZ, thanks for the feedback.
I don't think the boat I would be on would be too serious, although they are all paying $US700 each for the privilege. If they need a spare hand I am available for a day but I do not intend to pay for the opportunity of throwing my guts up and getting blisters the size of saucers on my hands. I will be the one at the front of the yacht sipping champagne with the scantily clad groupies sporting a cravat, white jeans, blazer and espadrilles.
It sounds interesting and a reasonable introduction to Phuket lifestyle.
