Well, what's the situation for this winter??
Will the barscene look as bleak this december as in dec-03 when I was there? Tiger was almost empty until x-mas.
I guess it's just wait and see... and try to find a cheap GF hotel with pool. I was thinking of Lamai but they don't have a pool (like their "no fee for overnight girl"-policy). Sea Sun Sand have a perfect location and is rather comfy but a tad to expensive in feb.
I UTFSE but the reports were a bit old. Any recommendations? Rat - U - Thit Rd is the furthest from the beach I'd accept.
BTW - back to the subject line: a friend.. a rather HORNY friend arrived at Phuket in Jan 04 at 1630. 1800 he was at the hotel. 1830 did he have the first girl to his room. When he woke up after a night of poon tang he found that he was missing $6000 in cash, his $1000 videocamera and his jewellery... After 15 hrs in country and he was mad as hell and broke.
His biggest problem... he snuck the girl into hotel and didn't register her. Let that be a lesson for each and every n00b!

Let it be a lesson to him that most of his loot wasn't in travellers cheques and that he didn't think to lock his camcorder away in the room or hotel security safe. And he had jewellery??? With a ladyboy, was he?
I'm off to Phuket myself from New Year's Eve for a week with a dating site girl from Bangkok, then the following week with another girl from Chiang Mai, also from a dating site. So what's it like at that time of the year, early January? I've only been in June last year.
I presume that I'll have to pre-book the flight and hotel because it ought to be busy at that time, right?

Yes, book well in advance, it is considered High season and Accommodation is hard to get all through January and at a premium price!

Oz, how far in advance should I book the flights and hotels? I expect that I'd be flying to Phuket from Bankok on 31st December. Presumably it should be easier getting a flight back there with the Chiang Mai girl around about 8th January?

Really, Farang9? It seemed OK when I was there this January. Granted, it was a bit of a mistake going up Doi Induthal in shirtsleeves, but for the rest of the 10 days there in early January, I never wore a jacket both day or night. According to the net, average daily temperatures are about 70f although night time temperatures can fall to about 50ish. That compares very favourably with Blighty, where it will be 50f tops if we're extremely lucky, but freezing point if we're not. I had three days in Hong Kong at the end of that holiday. That was a bit cool at night. I won't be staying with her for more than a night at Chiang Mai before we head down to Phuket where it will be lovely. I'll still be expecting to huddle close though, no matter what the weather!
