Ok, After years of going to LOS, I've decided to head to Phuket. AND (I know I get the whole "bringing sand to the beach" comments, BUT...) I'm bringing my Japanese GF with me. I'm looking for medium range hotels 1000-2500baht a night, that are right near the beach, if not on the beach with great rooms and service. Also, Does anybody have any information on Scuba diving in Phuket. She's an avid diver (SCUBA) and really want to go for a dive. I want to drink and maybe squeeze a round of golf in. Here are hotels I'm looking at; Kata Beach resort Kata Palm resort (maybe too far from beach??) Kata Poolside resort Peach Hill Resort (deluxe room) Thara Patong Salathai Also, is it possible to hook up with some brothers for a round of golf, preferebly early morning? Cheers

I've used West Coast Divers for several years and would recommend them. My most recent dive trip with them was in April this year - good boat, good gear, well managed and maintained. http://www.westcoastdivers.com/ The ride-along fee of 1000 baht for a non-diver (read: BG on a day trip) seems expensive but may be deliberately so. The office is in Patong and they have always been happy to give a discount (free equipment rental = 300 baht) if you walk into the office and book or if you book directly with them online and ask for a discount (since that way Westcoast don't have to pay a referral fee to a vendor or hotel (high in Phuket, around 700 baht) I never feel bad about getting part of that as a discount). They have Japanese speaking divemasters if required. Enjoy.

Macaler; Pretty sure - just depends if the Japanese speaking divemasters available on that day have already been booked by other dive operators. Divemasters tend to be transit-type workers since most are not "working" in Thailand. Book in advance and request same and you should not have a problem. Shark Point is an excellent dive. King Cruiser can be dangerous if the current is strong - I'd recommend it to Advanced Open Water divers and strong swimmers only. Phi Phi islands take longer but leopard sharks, turtles etc make it worth the trip. Damn I am getting jealous writing this! Enjoy.

Macaler, you need to be more specific as to which area of Phuket you plan to take your Japanese GF. Here's a map of Patong Beach & where the hotels are located: http://www.precisionreservations.com/MapManagement/Map.aspx?area_id=26018 You can click on the links to find out their rates & such (navigate North, West or South to see other areas on the map of other beaches). I'm assuming girl friendliness is not going to be a concern for you since you're bringing your own (unless you plan on some 3 way action of course) :p I stayed in a Deluxe Spa Wing room at the Deevana Patong (#10 on the map) this past April & the hotel itself was very nice. Had my own private outdoor jacuzzi & outdoor access to the pool area. Cost me about $63/night for that room. The staff hardly spoke any English though, & it was hard to communicate my needs to them. They didn't have any private internet access. Only a couple PC's set up in the lobby out in the open, so that was a drawback as well. Breakfast was decent. The hotel catered to young European & Aussie couples & families. Didn't see many punters walking around with their TG's when I was there, so I got a little rude treatment by 1 of the staff when I tried to bring mine in the 1st night. Other members have said they had no problems during their stay though, so that might have just been an isolated incident. The deluxe spa wing rooms are very nice though, I highly recommend them if you don't mind being a bit far from the beach area & from Bangla, but it was just a 1 minute tuk tuk ride to Bangla & the beach area. Decided to book a place closer to the beach & to Bangla this time around, so my friends & I booked a few of the bungalows at the Patong Villa. Haven't stayed there yet but I hear some good things about that place & it's very reasonable & GF. It's not shown on the map, but here's their link if you want to check them out: http://www.patongvilla.com/facilities.htm

DrunkTiger. Sorry, I should have said that, I'm a little partial to Kata area as I've heard it's bit more quiet down that way but NOT too far from everything else. I'm really not too pushed on where I stay as long as it's a nice hotel, kinda fancy but not too much as to be "overdoing it" in the JGF eyes. I mean, if it's way over the top what will I ever be able to do to top it. Open to ideas. I'm going to be getting tickets this week.

Thanks for the hotel websites, I am actually looking for input as to what is the nicest hotel to stay in in Kata (preferrably) from the list in my original post. Or any other idea for a hotel stay. In Pattaya the hotels are always hit and miss and I like to get some input before booking a room. Cheers
