Am coming to Thailand for 3 weeks, mostly in Phuket. My home cell is CDMA and will not work there. How easily and cheaply can one puchase a cell phone (new or used) and a prepaid SIM, to use for making local calls, and that will work in both Phuket and Bangkok? Thanks for your replies.

Very cheap on the top floor of Jung Ceylon in Patong. You can buy a basic Samsung or Nokia GSM Phone for about 1200-1500 Baht. True are giving away free Sim's at the Airport (look for the Yellow Portable booth), they are cheap for Overseas calls to USA, UK etc (I think from 1-1.5Baht a minute) but a bit pricey for a local call (TIT) ! I have found DTAC the best but yours & other experience will vary! Sim's are cheap to buy & run, enjoy.

Yes, there are market type stalls on the 3rd Floor of Jung Ceylon (about 15-20) & I am pretty sure you can buy 2nd hand ones, but maybe better to get a cheap new one there (not much difference). Also don't forget to look in the 7/11's as they often have great deals.
