Brother Root Rat, you should really post a detailed report on the current situation in Phuket at this time since you were just there. We keep hearing second hand about how bad things are in Phuket because of the affect that the SARS scare has had on tourism, but no one has really confirmed anything yet. All we know for sure is that some hotels and bars are going out of business ( Or in serious trouble ) and that 1000's of people are out of work. Clue us in bro. Peace

cmore, I'm not sure about the current situation but when I was there a month ago the island was feeling the full impact of SARS. The Meridien staff told me that there was only 80 rooms occupied out of a total of 480.
I did not spend time at the Patong bars, but I could see that Soi Bangla was pretty quiet when I was driving by. Restaurants were quiet...we even managed to get a table at Ban Rim Pa without a reservation on the Saturday evening!
It's low season now in Phuket so things would be pretty quiet anyway - so it may be hard to tell what is SARS impact and what is just low season - maybe one of the Phuket based brothers would have a better handle on this.
I think the big question for Phuket businesses is whether they can recoup losses in the coming high season or whether tourists have already made plans to go elsewhere (e.g. Caribbean).

Just returned this week from a 2 months stay in Patong, being my official residence when not out for work. The situation in Patong was rather extreme, according to myself and many long time residents it was never this quiet. Many hotels, restaurants and bars are struggling to survive and many just decided to close down for the time being and await high season. As Root Rat stated, the Meridian was running at about 15 - 20 % occupancy and this was not the lowest % of all hotels. A decent, basic, A/C room with Sat TV and reasonable amenities goes for as little as 300 B. Soi Bangla is as never before. 23.00 in the evening and it are rather strange. No hordes of tourists roaming the street for shopping or bar hopping. GoGo bars are suffering, some are doing OK. Rock Hard is having good days and very quiet days. Most others are just empty. Many girls and Katoeys who normally work in beer bars are now walking around, looking for some business, but they do not find it...
On another note; prices on Phuket, especially in Patong, have been raised the last years to the point that many tourists decided that Thailand (Phuket) was not a 'cheap' vacation land and said good bye. The decline in arrival numbers for some nationalities started last year and is now more extreme because of SARS. But again, the government only recognizes SARS as the reason that arrival numbers declined.... Phuket, including many private operators of bars, hotels etc. need to rethink the way they approach tourist. A more long term strategy is wishful, now everybody should know that times can change quickly...
I really enjoyed my last stay, Phuket without thousands of tourists was rather nice, looking forward coming home....

Even some of the Indian tailors and tuk tyuk touts have gone away...
Look at Soi Bangla....On 15 tuk's rather then 50... Next visti...Early Aug.....More punishment!
