I got the feeling that their tenure varied quite a lot. For example I first arrived on 11/10th and got some very short answers like 1 month or 1 week, 1 day etc. At first I thought that they were just full of it but then I realized that theirs is for hte most part seasonal work for the pros, and many were just arriving in town for the season.
So I guess the answer is it really varies. Linguistic skill is also a great measure if they speak-a-z-good anglase then they are more likely to have been around for a while. Also you should expect some pat responses, for example:

Today I met on Nana two (?!) girls I have met in Patong at least 6 years ago.... They both stated that they were just in BKK and had been in BKK ever since Imet them first time..

You have to be careful here, read some of Nokna's old FR's. Many TG's consider this year as a seperate time to last (in terms of job starts). So, yes they may have worked last year but only two months this year or even this time!
On the other hand most could be out and out liars? Up to you! You pay your money and you make your choice!

In my previous profession about 10 years ago I had a lot of dealings with the local "working girls" here in farangland. The standard response to the question of how long have you been "working"? - Was, you guessed it - "About 3 months." If you had proof that she had been "working" say 2 years ago then the response would be 'Yes, but then I stopped working and started again about 3 months ago."
With TGs who give me the 1 or 3 month line I always enjoy later asking them when they split with their Thai man (you will get an opening to do this when they drop the "I no like Thai man" line on you) - invariably they will say he left a couple of years ago - I then innocently ask "so what have you been doing for a living between then and a couple of months ago?"
Don't worry she will have an answer but it makes her squirm for a minute or two.
