Don't book the Marriot period. First of all even at $65 US it is way too much for Phuket. You can do better. Besides it is way way away from anything you'll want to be doing. It will take you far longer to drive the same distance in Thailand as it would in the States. If you haven't driven in Thailand before you are in for a big surprise when it comes to driving especially at night! BTW that part of the island is really boring not just because it is away from the bar scene but because it is away from almost every other activity as well. If you must book an American style resort try Club Med. It is on Katta Beach which is about 15-20 minutes drive from Patong but Katta is pretty nifty in its own right. If you are looking for BGs just go to Patong. Plenty of hotels I just got back from there myself and at first considered the Marriot. Instead I got a great local place owned by a German called the Tropica Bungalows. One street removed from Bangala Rd. Close to all the action transfers etc. and very quiet at night due to the walled gardens. It was 1500Bht/night for a cool bungalow with TV mini bar and A/C in a lush tropical garden setting just across the street from and facing the beach. Good pool too and NO JOINER! BGs love it. They have guards night and day and a great staff that is very cute and a real pleasure to deal with. My advice is that if you are reading this forum then you probably are going to regret being anywhere other than Patong. Patong offers a myriad of lodging at reasonable prices and it is where you want to be. I made my choice cautiously before I arrived based on the Lonely Planet book the web, and this forum. All were good guides but the people who post here are honest and I was glad I trusted them. It made all the difference for me. In responding to your post I am just trying to repay the many favors I received from the folks on the forum. Good Luck!

You could not find a better place if you want to get away from it all. I stayed there over a three day weekend and it was great. They have excellent food and the service was outstanding. I went to the beach (their own private one) at sunset and there was no one else there. This is a good place for someone to bring that special girl to and after spending a couple days together with only each others company to enjoy, you will quickly determine if you want to spend the rest of your life together or kill each other. This is not the place to go if you want to part of the Phuket action or want the Club Med environment.

Arcadius, Yes it's a long way from Patong. Some people like that. Have you ever considered that some people actually think that the Patong area sucks? I see no media manipulation that is any different from any high-end hotel. This is one of the best hotels on Phuket IMO, and if you enjoy peace & quiet, seclusion, excellent food and miles of unspoilt beach (not a bad list for a holiday, eh), it's a good choice. If not....as you say, there are plenty of other places.

Up to You on that one. I had a Darling that just wanted to get away and kep me happy... We go Marriott. I you want action it's too far out! I know of a bloke who added a visit to Grand Palace after each golf outting! Lovely property as is the same thing with the Marriott Resort on the River vs the J.W. on Suk....I have done both with 90% at the J.W. but still like to keep the River Resort in my quiver!
