Interesting read--reminds me of the first time I was in Phuket; even after being in BKK for a while, it takes a few days to figure out how everything works in Patong.
I feel your pain about the Burasari. I stayed there with a buddy back in Nov., my fourth time to Phuket, and had a miserable time with the staff there. They insisted on charging each of us 1,000 for guests, and my friend had his Laotian girlfriend with him, a legitimate girlfriend he's had for three years. Things really got ugly with the staff. We were able to negotiate down to 500, but it set a really negative tone for the entire stay there. If girls are in the plans, the Burasari is a definite no-no. The niceness of the hotel (and it's not even all that great) doesn't make up for the hassles you deal with there.
My feeling about hotels in Phuket is to forget about the nicer hotels; staying at a girl friendly place like the Orchid or C&N is much less stressful, particularly when you consider how much time you actually spend there. The idea that the girl cares about the quality of the place is utter nonsense albeit a typical erroneous perception one's first couple times there. They plain just don't care and as long as the place doesn't smell like ass, it's fine with them. It's quite different in BKK; you get much more out of splurging for a place like the Westin, the JW or the Sheraton there.
Re: the Kangaroo...very similar to my first experiences there, not being able to figure the place out. Some of the more experienced board members can correct me if I'm misspeaking here, but my understanding is that most of the girls that work at Kangaroo are not for sale; the majority of them (at least the good looking ones) have farang boyfriends (though most not living in Phuket) that pay them a monthly stipend. That, combined with the decent money they make bartending due to the heavy traffic the bar attracts, means that they aren't as desperate for money as most bar girls. The Kangaroo is pretty much the "king" of Bangla bars, and quite a privilege for the girls to work there. Their night crew certainly can have some stunners. I've worked on a few of them during my trips there and have made inquiries, but have never actually taken a girl from Kangaroo. Generally speaking, it's a place to have a few brews during the day rather than a place to shop...it is great fun, though.
Next time, make sure you make your way down Soi Eric and Soi Sea Dragon...shopping heaven!

the reason why I never went in Kangaroo Bar at night was because I found it too crowded with Girls.
there seemed to be no room for customers.
but I did take one of the Barstaff once.
but I suppose we are talking about the same Bar?,there used to be 2 Kangaroo Bars on Bangla.....

One Kangaroo bar has girls and customers, the other one not. This story can only be in a bar where there are actually customers...
As stated correctly, many of the girls working at K. have boyfriends. Some (!) have farang and Thai boyfriends. Even 1 of the girls has her mother besides her, working in the same bar. Mama would not like to see daughter going with the first customer. Only when future (financial) returns are expected, mama will let her go. This is why she has 'several' nice farang boyfriends.......

Hey Bett,
The Burasari is certainly a hotel I will try to avoid in the future. For the amount I paid, and the raves this place got on the forum, my expectations were not met. And mind you, I had both types of rooms they offered, the deluxe room, and the junior suite. The suite was nice and big, but what's the difference if you can't bring anyone back with you to show it off?
I personally just prefer to stay in nicer hotels and as you said, the Burasari was OK, but not that nice. Not since I paid 1.5x the rate I paid for the JW.
I'm not so concerned about the girls perception of where I am staying as I am my own. I'm not a big fan of the giant flying cockroaches they have there, and especially when they are sleeping in the same room as me. No bugs in my room is just one of my basic requirements.
I do find it disappointing that Kangaroo would be as you say. I imagine that a couple of those girls you could have a pretty good time with.
I think I might have walked down one of those other Sois you mentioned. Does one of those Sois (Eric or Sea Dragon) have a giant dive shop located on it? If so, I was there, but I walked down it during the daytime so it didn't strike me as a place to put on my immediate list.
I'll be back, and next time I promise to write about more than just the Kangaroo bar.

Yes, there are still two Kangaroo bars on Bangla. In fact, I walked by the other one in the daytime and thought I must have been really drunk when I left that bar because it sure didn't look the same in the late morning when I wasn't drunk. I then walked bit further down and saw the bar that I was at. Reassurance that I didn't totally lose the plot that night.

Yes, definitely the Kangaroo bar closest to Beach Rd., next to the U2. The other one is dead all the time.
Too crowded with girls at night? I'm surprised to hear that, because every time I've gone by it at night, it's usually brimming with drunk farangs (very popular with Aussies, Brits and Irishman) who are "trying" to get with the more attractive girls there but usually don't end up succeeding... I have noticed it is a popular "nightcap" spot for those who have taken girls before they head back for boom boom...lots of girls on laps.
There were two girls once that I was interested in (as were every other passerby). Both were gorgeous, with one having the most incredibly curvy body I've ever seen in a Thai girl. Got to know them a little bit and was told both of them had farang boyfriends (one was Norweigian, the other a Brit) that give them a lot of money and have "spies" around to make sure they don't fool around too much. I'm not sure how entirely true that is (my buddy tried independently and got the same response), but I did notice they stayed until 2am every night and never left with a customer...
It's still the best place to down a couple cold ones (and their beer is COLD) before 2pm or so...
