If you decide to take a boat ride tour avoid the Phi Phi Island excursion. Can't speak for the other tours but I took that one hoping to do some good snorkeling and all I experienced was washed out dead coral and the occasional colorless fish. Plus the waves were rough, which made the boat ride miserable (this was in June).

West Coast Divers in Phuket are good value. Most other schools hit you for big baht if you don't have ALL you own equipment. Racha island is said to still be a good dive site even in the low season. Cost is 2100 plus 300 for full kit rental.
In Pattaya I use Mermaids Dive school. Surprisingly it is more expensive to dive in Pattaya than Phuket. Expect to pay around 3000 baht for a two dive day in Pattaya regardless of who you go with.
Basically dive conditions in Pattaya are constant - poor to average whereas dive conditions in Phuket range the spectrum depending on the time of year.

Minder...West Coast also offers trips to the Patong side which eliminates that very long boat ride!
Agreed on Pattaya. not even average on a good day.
To many people and industry on the coast has killed the coral! I hope I wasn't eating the fish from that area!
Mermaid, over in Jopmtien is very active in PADI Training.
The owner, Steve from the Bronx, is a PADI Course Director of some tenure and offers lots of the tech stuff!

I plan a trip to Phuket 2nd half of October, have been at Kata several years and found weather mostly fine with some rain.
This year I will stay at Patong for some days and maybe Khao Lak.
Now: is the weather in Khao Lak similar to Kata/Patong - is it worth going mid October ?
Second, any proposal for a reasonably priced (1500 bath/day) hotel that is girl friendly for an occasional ST/LT guest ? (I do know the bar scene is not too big there, but thats fine).
any hints would be welcome
