I promised to give a report on this resort:
Laguna Phuket consists of five luxury resorts, linked by lagoons, on Bang Tao Beach, about 15-20 km north of Patong Beach. The Allamanda may be the poor sister of the group, but the Banyan Tree, Dusit, Laguna Beach, and Sheraton Grande are stiff competition to be measured against.
Upon entering my apartment, I was pleasantly surprised at just how spacious it was. It included a small kitchenette, large dining area, sunken living room, and separate bedroom. The overall size compared favorable to my luxury one bedroom apartment in California, although the bathroom was a minor disappointment.
Since I booked via Priceline, I expected to be assigned the least expensive fairway view of the adjacent 18-hole golf course. Instead, I received a pool view apartment, listed on the web for 3000 + tax. Furnishings were not new, but neither were they excessively worn. What I liked most, besides the ample living space, was the full glass exposure to the pool view, even in the bedroom. Opening the drapes to let the sun in complimented the light colors, and provided a most bright and cheerful atmosphere.
I must confess I'm extremely satisfied for 2000/night, including tax. I paid that much for Siam Bayshore in Pattaya, which is a dump in comparison. Add on the 800 baht joiner fee at the Siam, and it may be the worst value hotel in Thailand, not to mention the presence to the 'sex police' patrolling the grounds to make you feel like you're in a concentration camp. OK, it's not fair to compare with Siam Bayshore. As a player, I'm far from the action, but saving 1300/day off the regular rates, just what it costs to rent a Suzuki Kamikaze jeep downstairs.
Last time in Phuket, I stayed in a poolside deluxe room at Thera Patong for 3200. It was nice just to slide open the glass door and directly step into the pool, but how much is this convenience really worth? I have triple the space at Allamanda. The place is mostly populated with Japanese families, but guests aren't a problem since access is uncontrolled.
More later. It's time to go downstairs and climb into the cockpit of my Kamikaze. My heat-seeking missile is ready for some action.
