I understand BigDUSA point of view. When you go on holiday you go away wanting a clear mind, without any worry or doubts no matter whether they are justified or not, and you go away wanting an atmosphere where you can let your hair down. If for any reason, even if it seems stupid to other people, you feel that you wont be able to completely relax and enjoy yourself in the place where you are having your holiday then it may not be worth doing.

Howvere, 6 months is a long time for people to grieve. I think the thai people want things back to normal as quick as possible. Whether the tourists need longer coming to terms with what has happened and how this will influence their holiday choice destination is another matter.

No matter how silly the idea of another tsunami hitting phuket in the near future, there will still be 10% of me thinking....'dont swim too far out from the beach,....keep on looking to the horizon etc etc'. Now if I had a kid and a wife then it might be more than 10% thinking those thoughts.

The press in the UK have said this is a once in 500 years happening.
You have more chance of the plane crashing on the way than it happening again in 6 months.
So what now, you wont fly?

What about driving? Cars crash all the time.
Trains, they crash.
You could get stabbed.
You could get shot.

Get a grip of reality!
You cant go through life thinking you cant do something cos something "might" happen to you.
BigD, get some BigBalls and get over there

I had planned to visit a mate in Phuket last week but chose to postpone the trip. Not because I thought it was inappropriate to relax & enjoy myself but because I thought it was too soon after the event & relief efforts would be a priority. My mate would also be busy trying to restore his construction project.
I plan to go as soon as possible, maybe at the end of the month. I have no concern re. the possibility of another significant event and minor inconveniences should not deter anyone.

"'dont swim too far out from the beach"

actually, the best place to be is the middle of the ocean. Boats in deep water don't even notice tsunamis. So if you swim FAR enough... For example, a lot of divers who were far off-shore had no issue. Divers who were close to shore is another mater entirely.

As usual, Abrak's response to BigDUSA's post is measured and reasoned.
There will be no further Tsunamis in the next few centuries that will affect Phuket. The major plate shift measuring 9 on the Richter scale has happened. Any after shocks would be minimal and would not cause a further Tsunami capable of reaching as far as Phuket.
It is all very well for people in the good ole US of A to wring their hands and pontificate about how long the locals might wish to grieve, but I can tell them that I was in a restaurant last night where dozens of locals were actually watching a video or DVD about the Tsunami's affect on Patong, which is on sale on the streets here. One might have expected a wailing and gnashing of teeth, but the reaction was a rather macabre excitement as they identified buildings that they recognised and a fascination in watching their destruction.
At the risk of being repetitive here, I strongly urge anybody thinking of coming here to do so as soon as possible.
Were I to ask the locals whether they resent me intruding on their private grief, or are they happy with me being here, I have absolutely no hesitation in knowing what their response would be.
So let's not try and place Western values onto an Oriental culture. Life goes on. Sometimes the best way to overcome grief is to either be fatalistic about it, or to bury oneself in work or to try and continue with one's normal routine. The people here are doing both. Don't add to their problems by depriving them of the little extra money that you might put into their pockets by patronising the businesses that are their livelihood. They have already gone from the peak of high season to the depths of low season in two weeks.
So go on holiday to Florida or the Caribbean, BigDUSA, and worry about the hurricanes instead. Or head to the midwest into the Tornado belt. Or maybe some terrorist cell or looney might go beserk in your own backyard. Phuket is in many ways safer now than many places on this planet and the people are just as marvellous and resilient as always, but maybe even more friendly and grateful for the tourists who are their life blood.
If you love Thailand, the greatest gift you can give the people here is to put your tourist dollars, pounds, pesos, yen, knoner, deutchmarks etc into their pockets.

I was on the beach at Nai Harn on the south of Phuket when the tsunami hit and there was absolutely no indication that the waves were approaching (apart from the tide going out suddenly).
The small bay was filled with yachts for the King's Cup Regatta and they did not appear to move at all in the water!
The waves were very long and very deep - nothing like the tall "surf" waves you see in movies. Only when the waves reached the shore did they kick up any white water.

As I was being given a ride to Patong by a Thai guy I met (my motorcycle was swept away and inoperable) we were very nearly run into by a car while we were checking out the damage in Kata. The Thai guy pulled over and was a bit shook up but I was laughing. He asked me what was so funny about nearly being hit by a car and I told him that I had just survived a tidal wave only to almost be killed in a motorcycle accident. He didn't quite understand but it just shows you that you can go at any time.

I too was at the beach at Nai Harn when the Tsunami hit, my wife had sent me down there as she had a warning the wave was coming, this was about 30 mins before the wave hit.
I still have a feeling she was after the insurance money....

I got as far as the end of the salt water lake when the wave hit, and as it receeded went in to see the damage and helped move some trucks that were in the way. Some german guy was controlling the operatins there straight after the wave, he really had his shit together. There was a smaller wave a few minutes later but this was nothing compared to the 1st

Broken Leg
I used to live in Bali and was there during and after the Kuta bombings of 2002.

Following that, the locals where desperate for Tourists to return as soon as possible. The idea of avoiding an area for a period of morning exists only in the mind of westeners.

Whilst it is easier said than done, worrying about going to a place because of another Tsunami is not logical considering the probabilities of occurence, especially considering the risks many of us alreay take in our lives without even a second thought such as getting up in the morning or riding a scooter.

You may as well just starting shitting yourself about burning in hell for all eternity due to shagging prostitutes

Here we go again - another Brit cant resist taking a shot at the US - still haven't recovered from the bitch slapping of a few hundred years ago - Ay Mate? Big D has the right to his opinion - do not make it the view of all Americans.

I will be in Phuket for a week in the beginning of February - looking to help in any way I can aside from drinking at the bars and partaking in the local cuisine.
Will not think twice about going because of all LOS has given to me - on the other hand if someone only gets 2 weeks vacation a year - maybe travelling 1/2 way around the world to a disastor zone is not thier idea of a vacation.

Very good point, CZ. And well done for still planning to come to Phuket.
However, don't forget that by drinking at the bars and partaking in the local cuisine you will still be helping, if only in a small way.
Have a great holiday,
Whisper.
