Take the taxi but be warned that some of these idiots are kamikazi suicidal maniac. Last time I went there, this guy drove like 120km/h through all the turns and went on the wrong side of the street making blind corner turns down the hill.......etc. I had bad taxi drivers all over the world, this one was tops ! I told myself I would pick up the phone at the hotel and reported this idiot to the airport taxi control people. But then I met a cutie, and I forgot !

Just got back from Phuket. The place is in good shape and a lot of fun - definitely running at well below capacity but excellent nonetheless. Taxi to Patong is 550 baht. Minibus is 150 baht (11 people per bus). A friend and I hung around outside the exit to find another dude to share a taxi with - found someone easily, you might give it a try. Only thing is that you only get "one stop" in Patong so gotta either pony up more cash or agree where to go. Taxi back was 500 baht. I felt like I could get it cheaper but didn't want to hassle long over it. Quoted 170 for minibus back to airport. On a price note, chairs on Karon Beach remain 100 baht a set (ie. 2 plus umbrella), thought it a bit cheeky one day I went alone and they didn't want to cut me a break, especially as I'd planned on a few beers too. Scooters are cheaper, I paid 200 baht for a few days then cut it down to 150 when I extended my stay. About 40 baht per day gas was extra. Careful on all prices that are preprinted before tsunami, fishing trips, etc etc surely can be had at less than peak season, pre tsunami prices. Oh, the SKa bar overlooking Kata noi beach is an excellent place for the sunset, and the waiters have a special knack for not noticing that a) the cd is skipping, or b) that they played I shot the Sheriff 3 times during a 2 chang period. Still, great place! Try the Family Inn if you are looking for a good place to stay. And when all else is closed, check out the Safari. Not my favorite every night, but it is okay and open until 7am I think. Totally agree on the 20 minute stopover at the travel agency to "change cars" is a way to sell accomodation, as I have taken the minibus a few times. This time my taxi stopped there too, and I bet the get a few baht for stopping off. Cheers, Hank ps. a couple hundred baht saved on the taxi is one day free scooter or 3 beers, I am no cheap charlie but after 6 weeks in LOS, I wouldn't hesitate to keep a few hundred in my pocket because you start to sense the value of the baht, not the exchange rate translation -- if that makes any sense.

I always choose a taxi that has a sat belt in the back seat. One time there was no seat belt and I firmly yet politely requeted another taxi. It took an extra 15 minutes, but was well worth it IMHO.

Quote: from Minder on 5:56 am on Mar. 16, 2005 The C&N Hotel used to provide a free airport pick-up if you provided flight details and requested it when you booked. Not sure it that still goes.
I stayed there one night this week, this is the quote from their email: From: cnhotel@hotmail.com http://www.cnhotelpatong.com We have a free airport pick up if you stay more than 3 nights in our hotel

Although I posted about the airport taxi meter, I needed to make a round-trip to the airport to pick-up Mist - who I am now in love with - who was flying down from Bangkok. Everyone wanted 700-900 for a round-trip from Patong (go, wait, then come back). I found a guy who did it for the one-way fare - 500 baht. I found him to be a very safe driver with an OK car (good AC). So I used him back to the airport ont he return trip, he even let me stop along the way to buy a couple of things. He speaks pretty good English and is pleasant. FYI, his name is Thong and his mobile is 01-0794868. He might be a good option for Patong-to-airport trip or for a trip within Phuket.

CG, Once again thanks for the info #stored and will be called when in BKK to arrange pick up. As now have a mate travelling same flight from BKK and I’m not too sure if the hotel pick up will drop him off at his hotel before going on to mine? I suppose I could always show the driver a couple of pictures of the King to overcome any reluctance!

During my last stay I noticed a few metered taxis in Phuket town. I wrote down the number 076 232 192 that was written on the door and called later to arrange a transfer to the airport from Patong. Price was 100 THB for pickup in Patong + meter~300THB = 400THB in total. Funny that from the Airport, as ColoradoGuy mentioned, you have to ignore the minibus touts, cross the parking lot and get to the main road to find metered taxis. I think they are threatened by the other drivers not to go in front of the airport doors. I read in the german Phuket newspaper that the Phuket Governor recently planned to introduce more metered taxis and was physically threatened by angry Tuk-Tuk drivers outside his office... Latrell

I have an update (at least for this thread) on the taxi meter. The stand has moved. Here is the current info: From arrivals, ignore all the taxi counters and touts and walk outside. As soon as you get outside, turn right and you will see a big "taxi meter" sign at the end of the terminal. I took it today, fare to Patong was 410 baht (310 meter plus 100 baht airport surcharge), no hassles, nice car. There is no extra charge for extra people. I can't understand why people would pay 550-600 for a taxi when there is a taxi meter when the fare will be just over 400. But they must do it because there are plenty of taxi touts around and the taxi meter stand had no other customers besides me. The driver gave me his mobile # in case I wanted to call him for a ride back to the airport for the same fare.

I used the taxi stand last time in. While everyone was waiting in line for the 600 Baht taxis I got a ride to Karon for around 400 Baht. No problems at all.
