Right, I can't believe that journalist has brought a visit to Patong these days. Since I returned last month again after literally dozens of previous visits (including dec. 26, 2004), I can't wait to go back again. See my briefly written experience at http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=21&topic=528&start=40 Counting down for dec. 23 to be back again.

The doom I noticed was that the beach road jewelry shops were all closed - probably no inventory insurance, or maybe just no inventory to be had. Soi Easy was totally dead with most of the bars closed - too bad as it was a great place to get grabbed by dozens of girls. Soi Crocodile, Gonzo, Eric, Lion all looked fine and bustling. Tiger, both disco and bars, was really hoping - very busy. Soi SeaDragon looked a little quiet, but still had all venues running. I didn't find hotels to be much cheaper than last year. Everything else seemed to be about the same as last May, though purhaps more quiet during the day. Phuket is great.

i think thats the problem THEY do not offer really anything at all. You can fly for example from sweden for 2000 THB now to Thailand with 2 weeks in Hotel and the best TAT and the thai phuket maffia can offer is 4500 for a weekend or something like that from Bangkok.

Daffyduck wrote: Seems that every now and then the mainstream press likes to report on the Tsunami aftermath. CNN just recently had an article how reconstruction after the Tsunami will take 10 years, or so. Saw a link to this article on an Australian site recently: http://www.smh.com.au It's filled with lots of doom and gloom about low occupancy rates in Phuket, reduced flights, and how 'Phuket' is a ghost town? Anyone actually there to give some impressions what it's like right about now, just to verify how much journalistic accuracy is in that article? ______________________________________________ I live here (Phuket, that is) and Phuket town is certainly quiet, though not unusually so (this is the low season). Friends in teh hotel business in Kata and Karon say their hotels are now up to around 40-50% occupancy, which is about right for this time of year. last high season (ended around Songgran in April) was definitely down, but that was only to bwe expected. Problem is, what will happen next high season (October onwards) when most people expect to make their money for the year? Thailand is getting so much adverse publicity, starting with the SARS panic in 2002, then Bird Flu, then the tsunami, and the bombs in the south. People in Europe mostly don't realise that this is a very diverse country, and NONE OF THESE EVENTS (other than the tsunami, from which it has now recovered) DIRECTLY AFFECTS PHUKET. Just wish we could get this mesage across.

Hi to everybody, itīs my first posting here but as I was and still am pretty much involved in Patong I can give you enough details about what is going on. The hotel from my eployee was hit one of the hardest with the highest number of dead bodys inside. I survived only because I had my day off...! Anyway, we are still under construction but already open with special offers for guests. We do not have many at the moment and the bookings for the coming months are not very good as well. However, for the coming high season we are looking very good already so we have to survive only the coming months until christmas. We was lucky as we had insurance and enough cash in the back but most of the others where not so lucky. I can assure evrybody that already one month after the Tsunami was not much seen about the desaster, and if you did not know it before you may not even notice much. The beach is looking better than ever, and with many new shops in better style I think it is doing fine...! The media makes in my opinion the far bigger demage then 2 or 3 Tsunamis could have done. I have seen them how they acted and what they brought. Most small business do not have the savings they would need and had to shut down. Rentals are down, Many BG gone, many shops closed... But I am optimistic that we will recover for sure, if only the tourists come back. This is what I am doing all day long - try to get them back as quick as possible
