Update: May 2007. Kata Palm is no longer guest friendly. This doesn't mean you cannot bring a guest back. Upon checking in I was shown a sign in a placard, much like the kind bars display drink menus in, that said joiner fee 1000 baht, which is not being friendly to the idea of you bringing back a guest. For that much money you can get a whole new room in a guest friendly hotel. What gave me a bad taste is the res24 website did not spell out this policy before I booked and paid for the room, which was non refundable. The staff wanted to know why I was checking out the next day and I pointed to the placard and said “because of that.” After that, the typical Thai custom of talking about it amongst 3 people in Thai with people coming and going from the room, smiling at me and overall doing nothing took place. I finally had to ask if I was indeed checked out or not. I was as soon as I signed a document stating that there would be no refund. Live and learn. Or read this and save yourself some trouble. I ended up staying at C&N for 800 baht a night. Clean, comfy, quiet, aircon. If you prefer a resort with a pool they have one on the outskirts of Patong. I stopped in to check their rates and guest policy. GF and 1200/night.

Hope you didn't lose to much money ?? How many nights had you booked? 5 stars for walking,, 1,000 BHT guest charge WTF!!! I don't think its fair to blaim res24 or any booking agency, as these changes are often implemented in a spur of the moment, management thing. I guess I've been lucky,, 14 trips so far and not a single joiner fee asked for or given. I never book more than a night or two unless I am CERTAIN of the guest friendliness of the said Hotel. Mel

Thanks for the compliments Mel. I was surprised and you're right res24 isn't in control of this and may not even know about it. It would be good policy though for them to ask hotels to povide this info because I'd be reluctant to book through them as there is the element of the unknown and I wouldn't be saving any money to reserve at C&N who I'm now loyal to. It could be that this discount I got through res24 (pay 5 nights @1300 for 7 nights' stay) was what prompted Kata Palm's policy. If I had booked straight through the website it would have cost more and maybe that would have made them not impose the charge. Which I never paid. I was too wiped out from the travel to go out that night and had an 8:30 dive trip pickup. I got up extra early and rode the moto to Patong to book at C&N. Good policy on not booking more than 1 or 2 nights with a new hotel. I was tempted by the offer though. Never again. I would add don't book anywhere new that requires you to pre pay as it takes you out of the driver's seat.

I doubt which company you booked thru had anything to do with the "joiner" charges.Assuming you booked a double, I'd be asking who they expected to be the second person an that DOUBLE booking. Either way NOT worth the hassle. Moove, learn and thanks for telling others on BKTF about that hotels unfriendliness Mel

Chalk one up for res 24! I received an email asking to write a review and when I did this is what took place, names changed of course. Dear Mr Black Cats Greetings from Web Sawadee Plc Thank you very much for your support and for using our service over the time to book your accommodations in Thailand We are sorry to read about the inconvenience encountered during your recent stay in Phuket Joiner policies are in principle policies warying from hotel to hotel and we are not able to keep track of them / inform passengers about them, often once the hotels become more established in family segments they start increasing the joiner fee to astronomical levels we will publish your review so that further travellers are informed and in the meantime, we have negotiated with the hotel that they will refund us the unused portion of your stay Therefore you have a balance of THB 5200 with us which you can use on your next booking (if within hte next 6 months) else we can refund it to the credit card used for payment, at your convenience Kindly advise by return what we should do and in the meantime, we hope you had a pleasant stay in Thailand Looking forward to hearing from you, I remain with best regards the Boss

For the record the Kata Palm staff were very polite and were sorry I wasn't pleased with the hotel. I in turn was polite, but clear, about why I was dissatisfied. Had I gone on a tirade in my feedback I doubt I would have received similar results. EDIT IN: The other benefit is Kata Palm lost revenue over their policy and will lose future customers, from at least this board, if they continue this policy. Please don't pay joiner fees at any hotel, it's none of their business who you invite to your room, so long as you don't create a disturbance. Once you pay they'll jack up joiner fees, other hotels will follow suit and Thailand becomes the next Disney World.

I agree with that. Never pay "joiner fees". They are just an attempt to keep bar TGs out of the hotel, and you won't encounter them in any other part of the world. If one books a double room its no one's business who your overnight guest is. There was quite a decent hotel in Patong Beach which new management adopted a 500 baht joiner fee. After this was posted on our local web site, their business declined 25%. Guess what? Three months later the joiner fee was scrapped.
