The Arcadia is in process of being taken over by Hilton. It's a big (800 room) family type resort, with 3 pools and several restaurants right across the street from Karon beach. It's about 2 mins from a couple small beer bar areas in Karon but isn't very girl friendly. Karon beach is nice, but is the #1 place for drownings on Phuket.  But it's safe as long as you don't go too far out and get into the rip tide.
I actually like Karon as there are several spots where you can lay down on the beach without being surrounded by beach chairs. You can also go over to Kata beach which is 5 mins away.

Guess I was giving the negative vote. Still stand by that one. Look for something better. Even the Orchid, as mentioned before, is a better choice IMHO.

I stayed in the C&N Hotel on Rat U Thit rd a couple of weeks ago and was very happy with the whole set up.
I booked over the internet and thought I was getting a VIP room for 1500 bht per night. When I got confirmation, it was for 1200 per night.
When I checked out they then gave me a 10% discount bringing it down to 1080.
Cool.
It is very close to all the main action ie walking distance.
No view and no pool, but I don't suppose they figure highly on your list of requirements 
As far as being GF goes - I felt more embarrassed at the quizzical stares when I returned alone !
The 'other' C & N Hotel is the C & N Resort which is further away from the centre of Patong.

C&N is good. I was in there last week. Standard room 800 baht. Big double bed, clean, aircon, fridge, nice bathroom. Friendly staff. 1 min to walk to Bangla. Ideal for mongering. Airport pickup is free. 550 baht for the return. No frills, no hassle. Just get on with the pussy hunting, although the girls in Phuket seemed a bit older, heavier and uglier than in BKK or Pattaya. Gotta look around a lot for a decent one and then march on over and claim her.

I went to Pattya and Bkk last month going back but this time I want to look at the nice beaches for a couple of days, do a dive or two.
