some people just don't have education.

Balaclavas is Spanish for 'ballcleaver'.
I had an ex who had one.

PSST Whisper,

Wouldn't be anything to do with keeping the sun off would it?

Thais do look down on people with dark skin as they are the country bimkins, mountain people and construction labourers.

All the Thai workers on my project wear balaclava's and the local Tai lady workers wear wide brimmed cane hats over their safety helmets or cotton head capes and long white cotton gloves. Right through the year.

There again they might be advertising the fact that their terrorists or bank robbers.

UKpunter,
My original post was written (actually typed) with my tongue planted fairly and squarely in my cheek.
I know very well that the Thai people (bless them) are merely covering their skin.
Unlike other people I don't jump to ridiculous conclusions that are totally baseless and overwhelmingly pointless whenever I see something "out of the ordinary" (read: not like "back home").

As I cant start a new thread yet I will add this here

http://www.phuketgazette.net/news/index.asp?Id=3433

The decision to increase security coincided with a warning issued last night by the United Front for the Independence of Pattani (Bersatu) to “Dear People of the World” that the violence may spread from the South to other parts of Thailand.

In its warning, delivered to the news agency Agence France Presse (AFP) and reported around the world this morning, Bersatu said, “Persons who plan to visit Thailand NOW are warned not to travel to Patani Raya Region, (Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Satun, Songkhla) and the neighbour provinces (Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Pattalung).”

The statement concluded starkly, “Pattani people are not responsible for anything that happens to you after this warning.”

You can laugh it off all you want but I do see this as an important issue down here..

LivinLos,

The beer sodden fools who think, "it aint gonna happen to me" will laugh it off.

Whether Bersatu genuinely intends to attack other parts of Thailand, or whether it is simply using the threat of violence to rattle tourist markets and thereby damage the Thai economy, is unknown.

Damaging the tourist economy would be a powerful lever against the government.

The affect on the tourism industry of the latest incidents and of Bersatu’s warning has yet to be assessed. However, AFP quoted Napasorn Kakai, the TAT’s No 2 official in Phuket, as saying tourism “will be affected if the unrest is not over soon."

“We are concerned that if the unrest continues it will finally affect Phuket and Krabi,” she was quoted as saying.

The tourist industry by its very nature can be fickle.

One year you are overrun with tourists, the next year,"Where have they all gone?"

As someone considering property in the region (and would probably not change that even if real problems did start eg bombs etc) I am paying a close eye as high end Villa prices crashed in Bali after the bomb there...

For me its (as you quite rightly point out) the knock on effects of these issues that will have a far greater personal impact (I hope !!) than the chance of suffering end result violence.

Ah, yet another kindred soul looking at the opportunities present within every bad turn of events. Yes, if something bad were to happen, property prices will plummet -- and they will invariably climb again within 24 months.

And yet, you're the very same jerk who was quick to point out a similar opportunity when the SARS thing threatened to hit Thailand: weren't you babbling something then about how the baht would fall and everyone's US dollars would go a longer way. Including your own, of course.

Erm... check the baht against most other major currencies !!! I used to get 36 to my Euro now I get what 45 - 48 ???

Just cause the USD is falling with it does not make the baht any more expensive...

I guess looking for opportunities and playing safe with your assets makes you a 'jerk' these days does it ??
